October 22, 2023 | The Mission

On the heels of the passage where we are told to abide in HIM, abide in His WORD, and abide in His LOVE, Jesus is preparing people for his departure. HE will depart, but the disciples will also depart the safety of life on the safe side of the cross and begin life on the hostile side. Like troops entering the war zone, Jesus is preparing them for what they need to know. They need to be reminded of who they are and their mission.

NOTES | The Mission
John 15:12-27
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another. If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world,
but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
He reminds us of who we ARE

v. 12-19
John 15:12
“…just as I have loved you.”
John 15:15
“…I have called you friends…”
John 15:16
“…I chose you…”
John 15:19
“…you are not of the world…”
John 15:26
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me…”
Testify = to witness, to tell the truth of what one has seen or heard.
1 John 1:1-4
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life— and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us— what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit (Helper) will carry on the role of helping you know Jesus in a greater and fuller way.
He reminds of who we TALK ABOUT

John 15:27
“…and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
The mission of the Holy Spirit, and the mission we have been given are the same.
John 1:6-7
There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.
John 1:40-41
One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah.”

John 12:20-21
Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast; these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
Acts 1:8
“…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
As beloved friends of Jesus, chosen out of this world to serve Him, we have a mission to lead all people to Jesus.
