Student Ministries Hoo Rah
Sunday, October 22 | 5-9pm | 14747 W. Barr Road, Manhattan, IL | It is once again time for our annual fall hootenanny. Find your own way out to the Lathus homestead for some food, fun, and general zaniness.

Young Adult Pumpkin Party
Friday, October 27 | 5-8pm | 420 W. John Casey Road, Apt. 4, Bourbonnais | Come hang out for a pumpkin party. It is BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin). We will have supplies to decorate or carve. Please also bring a favorite fall treat or drink to share.

Women's Meal Prep Day
Saturday, October 28 | 2-3:30pm or 3:30-5pm | We are going to meet together to prep, cook and package some freezer-friendly meals for our families. With multiple recipes made in bulk, we will all go home with a variety of freezer meals that we can use for months to come. We will have 4 meal choices that you can make as little or as much as you want. Please sign up at the following link for a time slot (or a sign-up list will be at the welcome desk): https://bit.ly/3s1punH An ingredient list to bring with prep instructions will be at the welcome desk on Sunday. Casey Cleveland will be at both services if you have any questions.

Harvest Dinner
The Harvest Dinner is now about a month out, November 16. This is our annual free "Thanksgiving" for the seniors of Manteno. We need a lot of food donations to carry this dinner off. And people to bake turkeys. And people to volunteer, but we will get to that one later. Back to turkeys and food donations. To sign up to bring donations or cook a turkey, go to this page https://mantenonazarene.ccbchurch.com/goto/needs/public Check the box on what you want to sign up to bring. Go up to the right-hand corner and there is a button that says signup. It will ask for your contact information. It wants your email because it will send you a reminder email before the due date and it will send you an email now that tells you what you volunteered for. (Too invasive or complicated, just call the office and we will write you down.)

Women's Email List
Email the office or sign up at the welcome center if you would like to be on the women's ministries email list. Things are happening. Get yourself on the list rather than deal with the guaranteed FOMO you'll experience later

Women's Secret Santa
Please fill out the information card at the welcome center if you want to participate with a $10 limit. Sign up by November 15.

Wednesday Night Dinner
Wednesday | 5:30-6:15pm | $4 | This week we are having chicken enchiladas or taco salad.

Church Board Minute
October is Pastor/Clergy Appreciation Month. We encourage you to take a moment to find a creative way to appreciate our pastoral team. We have a great pastoral team leading us. While we always appreciate them, the month of October reminds us to make the extra effort to be deliberate in our recognition. We’ll take time on October 29 to formally recognize the pastoral team.
Our Pastoral Team:
· Pastor Ken Bushey, Lead Pastor
· Pastor Amy Kilpatrick, Children’s Pastor
· Pastor Marcus Cleveland, Student Ministries Pastor
· Nathan Lacher, Worship Leader

Pursuing the Heart of God: Problem Perspectives
1 Samuel 17: 3-50
October 22, 2023

1 Samuel 17:3-11, 16
The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.

A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back. His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him.

Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.

What’s your problem?

Don’t be the problem.

Don’t be a part of the problem.

1 Samuel 17:24-25
Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear. Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.”

Don’t run from the problem as if it’s not your problem.

1 Samuel 17:26
David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

1 Samuel 17:28-29
When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

Don’t fight those who are fighting the problem.

1 Samuel 17:31-32
What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.
David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

Don’t lose heart on account of the problem.

Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head.
1 Samuel 17:38

So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
1 Samuel 17:39-40

Center your sights on the Source of the solution.
He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
1 Samuel 17:43

Center your sights on the Source of the solution.
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty...”
1 Samuel 17:45

Center your sights on the Source of the solution.
As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
1 Samuel 17:48-50

Center your sights on the Source of the solution.
So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
1 Samuel 17:48-50

Center your sights on the Source of the solution.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God...
