NOTES | Investing Deeply in the Next Generation
Psalm 78:1-8
Listen, O my people, to my instruction; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should teach them to their children, that the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments, and not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
What do we pass down?

We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come…v. 4
1. What we know about God’s character.

…the praises of the Lord…v. 4
2. What we know He is able to do.

…and His strength…v. 4
3. What God has demonstrated.

…and His wondrous works that He has done. v. 4
4. The story of His faithfulness.

For He established a testimony in Jacob…v. 5
If you have no story of God’s faithfulness in your family’s past, allow Him to provide that story in you.
5. The laws and values He’s given.

And appointed a law in Israel…v. 5
Deuteronomy 6:6–9
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
2 Timothy 1:5
For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
What do we hope to accomplish?

Psalm 78:6-7
That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments…
Remembering God’s works gives us confidence in Him for the future.
*Faithful parents and teachers sometimes see children ignore God.

*Some ignore God for a season, then return.

*We all will stand before God alone.
Be faithful to what you’re called to. Trust HIS faithfulness to complete it.
