NOTES | Title
Ephesians 5:21-33
and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:18-19
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
The husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church. v. 23
The church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. v. 24
1. The text is written to the believer.
2. The text is for husbands and wives, not men and women in general.
3. Submission is a spiritual discipline, not a form of discipline.
4. Spiritual disciplines are fostered and advanced in spiritual community.
5. The Relationship of Christ and the Church as it relates to a Christian marriage is a picture, not a formula.
When I say I want biblical wife.
What people think I mean: I want a wife who is passive and subservient.
What I really mean: I want a wife who is totally willing to drive a tent spike into a tyrant's head should the opportunity arise. (See Judges chapter 4 for more to this story.)
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her. v. 25
Husbands’ Love:
1. To have generous concern and expression for your wife’s well-being.
2. To esteem.
1 Peter 3:7
You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
“Gave Himself up”
Genesis 29:31
Now the Lord saw that Leah was unloved…
