Bob Kauflin - “What if we came to a Sunday meeting or began our Bible study with the awareness that we have no way of reaching the God we’re wanting to meet with unless He provides one?”
He is unknowable, yet He has made Himself known. He is Transcendent, yet He is Immanent.
1. God is Transcendent.
A.W. Tozer - “He is as high above the archangel as above a caterpillar, for the gulf that separates the archangel from the caterpillar is but finite, while the gulf between God and the archangel is infinite.”
“…For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher…”
Thomas Trevethan - “God is not just quantitatively greater than us, but qualitatively different in his greatness. He is transcendent, infinitely above or beyond us.”
C.S. Lewis – “if there’s anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they’re either braver than most or else just silly.” “Then he isn’t safe?” said Lucy. “Safe?” said Mr. Beaver. “Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ’Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.” “I’m longing to see him,” said Peter, “even if I do feel frightened when it comes to the point.”
2. God is Immanent.
Other religions like Islam teach of a Transcendent god, but only Christianity tells of the One True God who is not only Transcendent, but Immanent.
- Bob Kauflin - “When we forget God is transcendent, we find it hard and unnecessary to fear him. When we forget God is immanent, we find it hard and unnecessary to love him. But he is both. And that makes us fear and love him all the more.”
- He is Greater than you can ever fully comprehend and closer than you can ever truly deserve.
-Richard Sibbes – “There is more mercy in Christ than sin in us.”
