Long Letter From Pastor Marcus about Student Ministries Changes
Expand
Dear Parents and Church,

It has been an adventurous year! I feel so blessed to be a part of Manteno Church Student Ministries and all that Manteno Church is doing! Our mission has been the same from the start – to see Students come to know Jesus and it is to that I now write. During the month of December, the Lord laid on my heart that the processes MC Students were using were not working the way it could work in the way God intended. Without changing anything, I began looking at what we were doing, how we were doing it, and how our students were benefiting from what we were doing. The truth was, we had a disjointed youth group, with our middle school partitioned away from our high school, with no desire to know each other.

I began to pray on how God would have these things change. I know change can be difficult. I know that these are systems that have been in place for a long time. During one of my quiet times the Lord revealed to me that the goal of the body of the church is to be family. That family sticks together no matter how difficult the circumstances are. Family is sometimes dysfunctional but through Christ works to repair the relationships that have been broken. I have seen many families changed through the work of the Lord. I believe MC Students is no different.

I began to share with Pastor Ken what God had laid on my heart, how I think it could be approached, and what possible changes could be made. Nothing was decided overnight. It was lots of conversations over a period of several months in which a new format was being created. After Pastor Ken and I had talked quite a bit, I brought my new vision to Melody and the NYI council. It was not a one-meeting deal. It took several meetings, a detailed plan, and lots of discussions to decide that a new format could work for MC Students.

All that brings us to now.

I have a new format I believe God has given us to try in MC Student Ministries. This new format is not a complete and total change of everything we have going on. This format has changes that will maximize the Spiritual formation of our students, create a better atmosphere for our younger students, increase the time we spend together, and unite our high school students with the rest of the church body. Our goal would be to implement these changes at the same time that we are switching to 2 services (September.)

Here is the plan:
First: We are going to create a brand-new preteen ministry. It doesn’t have a name yet, but I believe it is the right move for our 5th and 6th-grade students. 10- and 11-year-olds learn very differently from 12- and 13-year-olds. In fact, the only other time in the life of a person where more development occurs is from birth to 3 years old. There is a lot happening between 5th grade and 8th grade and I think God can do awesome things when our preteens are learning in a different atmosphere.

Second: Because I cannot be in two places at once, our 7th and 8th graders will move their learning time to Sunday nights with the high school students. Here’s why. By the time a student is in 7th and 8th grade, they are beginning to learn the way high school students learn – the maturity is different, but they receive information the same. There is also an importance to our younger people seeing the way our older students worship and giving opportunities for friendship and mentorship among the students. Think of Sunday nights as our Youth worship service.

At our winter retreat, we invited the 7th and 8th graders to come and what we discovered was a mutual benefit to both the older students and the younger students when they came together under the banner of family. We were pleasantly surprised by this outcome. It is something we hope to foster in the years to come.

Third: Our small groups will move to Wednesday. We will have 5 new small groups. Middle school girls, middle school guys, 9th and 10th-grade girls, 11th and 12th grade girls, and high school guys. All these groups have excellent leaders whom the students know well. In several discussions, we discovered that the only part of our church family that does not participate on Wednesday nights is our high school students. They have only one night a week that they meet. It is hard to disciple others when you only see them once a week and they don’t get to see others who are also going through a discipleship process.

So, our Sunday nighttime will be teaching, worship, and fellowship, and our Wednesday nighttime is discipleship and fellowship. We are building relationships, and becoming family while learning about Jesus multiple times a week.

Fourth: Our preteen students will once a month (to start) be excused from Sunday service to participate in their own form of worship and learn about the current sermon series. They are still learning to sit in the sanctuary with Mom and d\Dad. Sometimes this can be tough, so we want to lessen the load and help them learn by giving them some time of their own – it is also the second time they are getting together in the week.

We will do all our large events together, such as the Hoorah, Paint Wars, and Youth Week as one youth group! Riots will still happen monthly and high school hangouts will still happen monthly.

I know change can be hard. As I am trusting the Lord in this, I ask you to also trust Him. I do believe if we try this, we will get God-breathed results. It may be hard at first, but we think this is the right move for MC Students. This is also the time that we could use some more volunteers! If you feel like you're looking for a place to serve, we would love to have you. Know that as much as you count on me to minister to your student, I need you to pray for me. I am praying for this and for you and your students. We do this together. We are Family.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Marcus

Stellar Vacation Bible School Donation Board
VBS donations are absolutely positively due Sunday. On Monday, Pastor Amy will be going out to buy supplies that have not been turned in. Let her know the status of your donation if it is arriving after Sunday.

Steller VBS
Invite everyone! Sign your kids up for VBS and please invite their friends! We would love to see more kids come to enjoy this amazing week of Jesus, games, snacks, videos, singing, and more. Register at bit.ly/VBSmanteno23

Steller Volunteers Dinner & Meetings
There will be a volunteer meeting on the 1st day of VBS after the Sunday morning attendance. We will go over expectations, does and don'ts, and the schedule. Please plan to be in attendance. We are also offering dinner for workers and families as we have done in past years. To make planning easier, there will be a signup/reservation for each night. Choices will be between the main, a salad, or a kid-friendly meal (ie mac& cheese, butter noodles) That way we don't run out of butter noodles for the child who absolutely categorically doesn't eat cheese. Workers should have received a more detailed email. The link to register for meals is

Camps
Chicago Central District has its own teen and children's camps this year. Children's camp is at Olivet from July 13-16 and is for rising 2nd-7th graders. The cost is $195 and more information is available at https://ccdnaz.org/kidscamp. Teen camp will be at Cedar Lake from July 17-21 and is for rising 7th-13th graders. Cost is $250 and more information is available at bit.ly/3HlF3Lk. As you can see, camp costs a little bit more than it did when you were their age. (For me, it was $52. But our camp was a mess. But we had a lot of worship and learning about God. Thanks, Mom and Dad!) We would love to offer scholarship money to all students going to camp to have fun, make friends, and learn about Jesus. Our goal, if we have the same approximate amount of kids and teens going as last year, 30, is about $3,200. This will be about a half scholarship for everyone. (We do realize we have been asking for a lot of NYC money this year, it's okay if we don't make it. Just be ready to suggest to your co-workers that they should buy the wrapping paper, pizza card, cheese, and sausage this time.)

General Assembly
Every four years, Nazarene General Assembly and Conventions is a place for Nazarenes from around the world to gather for celebration and worship, as well as to conduct the business of the global church and its various ministries. It is an awesome experience to be there for worship. And this year, it happens to be in Indianapolis from June 9-12. There will be worship services each night at 6:30pm as well as a Sunday morning service at 10am. For more information and to register to attend anything at the convention, go to ga2023.nazarene.org The Sunday morning of General Assembly, we will be streaming the service from Indianapolis with a live host.

My soul will rest in Your embrace

Journey of Grace: Sufficient Grace
2 Corinthians 12:8-9
May 28, 2023

Grace is favor given to someone who deserves the opposite.

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
(Genesis 6:8)

SUFFICIENT GRACE

SUFFICIENT GRACE
“My grace is sufficient for you...”
(2 Corinthians 12:9)

2 Corinthians 12:7
Therefore,in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

2 Corinthians 12:8
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

“One does not know God’s ‘sufficient grace’ until you need it most.”
-Morris Weigelt

“You are stronger in your weakest moments when I am with you than you are in your strongest moments without me.”
-David Busic

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Isaiah 43:1-3
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

1 Peter 5:10
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Gratitude
Expand
Verse 1
All my words fall short
I got nothing new
How could I express
All my gratitude

Verse 2
I could sing these songs
As I often do
But every song must end
And You never do

Chorus
So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
‘Cause all that I have is a hallelujah hallelujah
And I know it’s not much
But I’ve nothing else fit for a king
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah

Verse 3
I’ve got one response
I’ve got just one move
With my arms stretched wide
I will worship You

Bridge
Come on my soul
Oh don’t you get shy on me
Lift up your song
‘Cause you’ve got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord
