Sermon Series: Romans
Sermon: A Seismic Shift, Part 2
Passage: Romans 3:25-31
Pastor Shawn Bowen
Part One: Romans 3:21-24 (Review)

1. Paul painted a bleak picture of the human condition due to sin (Romans 1:18–3:18)

2. Paul presented the solution to the problem (Romans 3:21-24).

a. The righteousness of God has been made known.

b. This righteousness is given only through faith in Christ.

c. It is given to all who believe.

d. It is offered to everyone because it is needed by everyone.

e. All who believe are justified freely by God’s grace.

f. Justification comes as a result of the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.
Part Two: Romans 3:25-31

The key message in this passage: Jesus’ death on the cross was a sacrifice of atonement that propitiated God’s wrath and cleared the way for our reconciliation as sinful human beings with a just and holy God.

1. “Propitiation” defined

a. General definition:

b. Ancient pagan religions:

c. The biblical sense:

2. The “sacrifice of atonement” and the Mercy Seat

3. The atonement offerings and the significance of blood

4. Substitutionary atonement

5. God did this to demonstrate His righteousness, both in the past and in the present.
Other messages in this passage:

1. There is no room for boasting.

2. There is one God, and both Jew and Gentile are justified through the same faith.

3. Justification by faith does not nullify the law, rather, it upholds it.
A right perspective on the Law

1. The law makes us aware of God’s standard for our lives and reveals aspects of His character.

2. The law brings awareness and conviction of sin.

3. The law provides guidance for our lives.

We don’t have to strive to fulfill the law or fear its penalties for disobedience, because Jesus has fulfilled it on our behalf. We just need to have faith and believe what He has done for us.

Rome Trip

As we study Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome, do you find yourself wondering what it would have been like to be a recipient of that letter? What was Rome like in 57 AD? Paul did eventually visit Rome. Where did Paul visit? Where was he jailed? Today Rome is an amazing city that still has some of these experiences to offer and many more from after Paul’s time frame yet still pivotal to Christian history like the Colosseum.

Amy Stennes is planning a trip to Rome, Italy Oct 13-22 (over the JeffCo Fall Break) and is inviting you to join the group as we explore some of these experiences. Amy also plans to visit the Tipton/Wiederwohl family in Málaga, Spain just prior (Oct 8-13), and you are invited to join that part of the trip as well. If you are interested please email Amy.
