REVIEW

Covenant –
“A chosen relationship in which two parties make binding promises to each other” – Thomas Schreiner –
A relationship between two parties involving permanent and serious commitments of faithful, loyal love, obedience, and trust.”
– Gentry/Wellum –

Ex 19:1-8 – God redeemed Israel from bondage in Egypt and bound them to Himself in covenant relationship as His possession and priests in the world

Exodus 24:1-8

As His covenant partner, God demanded Israel to devote themselves to His glory, entrust themselves to His power, and be obedient to His authority

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Devoted to His glory

Exodus 20:1–2 (ESV)
And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Entrusted to His Power

• The God Who Delivered You

Exodus 19:4 (ESV)
‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

• The God Who Will Bless

Exodus 23:25–26 (ESV)
You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. None shall miscarry or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.

• The God Who Will Deliver the Land

Exodus 23:28–30 (ESV)
And I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites from before you. I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the wild beasts multiply against you.
Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased and possess the land.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Obedient to His Authority

• King to Kingdom
• Father to Son

Exodus 4:22 (ESV)
Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord, Israel is my firstborn son

• Husband to Bride

Jeremiah 31:31–32 (ESV)
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
As God’s covenant partner, like Adam, Israel failed and proved the Law will never produce devotion, trust, or obedience....

Exodus 32:1–6 (ESV)
When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

But His by grace God can

Exodus 32:11–15 (ESV)
But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people.

2 Kings 13:23 (ESV)
But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion on them, and he turned toward them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, nor has he cast them from his presence until now.

Exodus 34:6–10 (ESV)
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”
And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.
