Are You a Follower or an Admirer? | Rev. Gary Rideout

For the season of Lent, we will be reading through the book of Matthew, focusing on Jesus as the fulfillment of the long-awaited Messiah by the people of Israel. This should help tie both the New Testament and the Old Testament together as we see the book of Matthew constantly fulfilling passages from the Old Testament that longed for a Messiah, as the answer to their problems. We will also focus on the concept of the Kingdom of God as being both present now here on Earth with the beginning of Jesus' ministry, and in the future with the return of Christ to Earth.
Jesus consistently used the expression “follower.” He called for disciples. He never asked for admirers nor adherents to His teaching. Followers of Him was what Jesus was looking for. So, what does it mean in our lives to be a follower as opposed to an admirer? Can we answer the question as to which one we truly are?
