A quick overview of the biblical history of the Jews...
A quick overview of the biblical history of the Jews...
1. The Jews had a false sense of security based on their Jewish heritage (v. 17).
a. The name “Jew” represented their history, their race, and their religion.
b. They saw themselves as unique and favored by God.
c. They believed they were exempt from God’s judgment.

2. They had a false sense of security based on the Law (vv. 18-20).
a. The Jews had been entrusted with the Law.
b. The Law was supposed to make them holy and capable of teaching the nations; instead, it made them self-righteous.

3. The Jews were being hypocritical (vv. 21-24).
Application 1 - Don’t be hypocritical.
a. Be a person of integrity.
b. Make sure your actions align with your beliefs and honor God.

Application 2 - Don’t develop a sense of security in anything other than Jesus.
a. Examples of mistaken sources of security:
· The idea that when we die, we simply cease to exist
· The idea that there is not God, so talk of judgment is nonsense
· The idea that we are good enough to get into heaven
· Our Christian heritage
· The belief that there is no hell
· The idea that even if there is a hell, a loving God would never send anyone there
b. The truth:
· There is an eternity and we will continue to exist after we die
· There is a God, and we will be accountable to Him
· We are not good enough
· Our Christian heritage is not going to help
· Hell exists
· God doesn’t condemn us to hell, our sin does

Application 3 - Our response
a. If you are a believer, share your faith with those around you.
b. If you are not a believer, don't look for your sense of eternal security in anything other than Jesus.
