Intro:
A. Jeremiah 18:1-6 – The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, 2 “Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” 3 So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. 4 But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over. 5 Then the Lord gave me this message: 6 “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.
B. A potter’s house is where amazing things are created
C. It’s a place where things can be redone, recreated
D. Sometimes it is necessary to start over from scratch
E. The potter changes the clay into something of beauty
F. He also wants to mold us with a function, a plan. Something useful.
1. Creation
A. Genesis 1:1-2, 31 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
B. God loves to make something out of nothing
C. He had a plan from the beginning, a beautiful earth, even when it seemed nothing could live here or sustain life
D. The Spirit changes chaos & emptiness into something amazing
E. God has always had a plan, not just for Earth, but for us
2. God’s plan
A. John 1:1-5, 14 – In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. 14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
B. The God of Creation came to live here on earth, the “Word” (Jesus), became flesh and made His home among us
C. Why, because there was a plan in place?
D. Revelation 13:8 – And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered before the world was made.
E. 1 Peter 1:18-20 – For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. 19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began…
F. God’s plan has always been you (forgiveness and restoration)
3. The Spirit also remakes us
A. 2 Kings 2:9 – When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.”
And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.”
B. When the Spirit moves, amazing things happen
C. Things, that don’t make sense, things out of our control
D. If given the chance, God will restore to full value, what the world has taken!
E. The world might define you as an ugly lump of clay, but God defines you as amazing and remakes the real you
4. The Spirit is in us
A. Luke 24:49 – “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
B. After Jesus died, the church was in chaos, but Jesus shows up & says, hey listen you can’t quit, I need you.
C. Go and wait for what I’m sending, you think walking with me was awesome, wait until the Spirit actually lives in you!
D. The Spirit is going to make all the difference
E. Even before the world began, His plan was to restore/restory you
