“Not everybody who grows old, grows up; there is a vast difference between age and maturity.”

As you read the Book of James, think about the turnaround, and look for it in your life as well

You can’t be popular with the world and with God at the same time. – Jesus wasn’t.

Jesus modelled DOING for us. He didn’t simply talk about going to the cross, Jesus actually went to the cross.

Simply saying that you follow Jesus isn’t the same as actually taking up your cross daily and following Him.

James needs the rest of the NT and the rest of the NT needs James:

Legalism says that we are saved by works.
License says that we are saved without works.
Liberty says we are saved for works.

Faith isn’t simply mentally accepting the truth of gospel; rather, faith is acting on the truth of the gospel.

DOING is not a bad thing.
DOING is not the antithesis of faith.
DOING is the evidence of faith!

James is clear… If your life lacks DOING, then your faith is lacking.

James is a book of practical wisdom for the New Testament church.

1. Be careful of pursuing WEALTH:
Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. – James 5:3

2. The Tongue:
Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. – James 3:10

Remember, knowledge will puff you up, but wisdom will grow you up.

Let’s review… James reveals that Mature Christians are:
1. Happy Christians
2. Useful Christians
3. Active Christians

REFLECTION & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. Assess your life with Jesus... Are you in a season of simply growing older as a Christian OR are you noticeably GROWING UP in Jesus? Explain.
2. How are you handling the trials in your life? Are they setting you back OR are they propelling you forward in faith?
3. Are you a DOER of the Word or are you primarily a hearer only? What do you feel God is calling you to DO?
4. Is your life characterized by legalism, license, or liberty? Remember, liberty says we are saved for works.
5. Are you a friend of the world? Would the world consider you one of their own? Or, are you seen by others as a "peculiar people?"
