Shame Undone in Psalm 51

We learn to:
Name the Shame! - that dirty, icky, BAD feeling you may have internalized
Tame the Shame! - clarify the cause: sift thru where there’s SIN you can confess
Claim God’s HELP for Cleansing - GO to God with a CONTRITE heart
Proclaim God’s RESTORATION to Begin Again – Renewed, Restored, Redeemed.

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! [he continues this theme in verse 7 and 9]
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, [a plant mentioned in OT, used for ceremonial cleansing] and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Guilt focuses on behavior: "I did something bad."
Shame focuses on self: "I am bad."

Psalm 51
3 For I know my transgressionS, and My Sin is ever before me.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation...

Claim God’s HELP for your Cleansing - GO to God with a CONTRITE heart

Psalm 51
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

The antidote for shame is empathy

Psalm 51
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Proclaim God’s RENEWAL, RESTORATION, REDEMPTION to Begin Again.

Proverbs 24:16 - “for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again”

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
14c ...and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

REFLECT on YOUR DEEP SADNESS
Name it! - "I am feeling..._________ ."
Tame it! - "I am feeling this way because _________ ."
Claim it! - "Lord, I give you my feelings of ________ and false beliefs of _____. What Truth (verse) do you want me to claim to comfort and guide me?" Write it down.
Benediction
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out in the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must but because you may.
This is why we were born!
Woo!
Beyond Sunday
Like pain is a warning sign to our body, so emotions are to our soul. Our emotions are more than a feeling for they provide us an opportunity for greater understanding of ourselves and intimacy with God. In this 7-week series, More Than A Feeling, we will focus on one of six core emotions each week, while practicing how to deal with how we feel with the help of God. This week, we look at how God wants us to handle things when we feel SHAME.

1. How are you dealing with how you are feeling? Have you been taking time to reflect on your emotions and using the process of Naming, Taming, Claiming, and Proclaiming? If so, what have you gained? If not, what holds you back from doing so?

2. How do you describe the difference between GUILT & SHAME? How did our guest speaker, Pastor Tina, differentiate between the two? If needed see the resource below by Brene Brown. Why is it important to deal with our shame? What happens if we don’t?

3. What is the correlation between shame and perfectionism? How do you fall into this trap?

4. Read Psalm 51. What specific words in this Psalm help you understand that your shame can be released? Besides David, who wrote this Psalm, who else in the Bible overcame shame? And how? If needed, see John 21.

5. Reflect on Psalm 51:16-17, 1 John 1:9, what is our part in releasing our shame and what is God’s?

6. Practice & Prayer:
Take 5-10 minutes to identify your sadness and bring it to God using the following process:
Name it! - "I am feeling..._________ ."
Tame it! - "I am feeling this way because _________ ."
Claim it! - "Lord, I give you my feelings of ________ and false beliefs of _____. What Truth (verse/thought) do you want me to claim to comfort and guide me?"
Proclaim it! - Share what you have gained with another person.
