"Vocation" comes from the Latin word vocare, which means: "Calling"
Paul's "Progression"

1. "Blameless according to the Law" (Philippians 3:6)
2. "The least of the Apostles" (1 Corinthians 15:9)
3. "The least of all the saints" (Ephesians 3:8)
4. "The chief of sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15)

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Has there been a time when God has humbled you. If so, what was the result?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINTS
God’s grace has the power to transform lives, giving us a new identity, and filling us with both humility and confidence.

DIGGING DEEPER
God’s grace has the power to transform lives,…
1. Read 1 Timothy 1:12-14. How does Paul describe his former self? Does this, in any way, describe you before you accepted Christ? In what ways?
a. Who does Paul thank for his transformation? How was he rewarded? Has your life also been transformed? Have you received a reward? If so, in what ways have you been rewarded?
b. To what does Paul attribute the mercy shown to him? What was the true source of the grace shown to him and to us?
c. Paul is appealing to his own experience as evidence of the transforming power of God. If God can call and equip a man like Paul who formerly was violently opposed to the gospel, is there any limit to His transforming power? How has this power impacted your life?
d. What is the point of this passage? In what way did Paul expect Timothy to understand it? … giving us a new identity,…
2. Read 1 Timothy 1:15. How does Paul see himself in light of God’s grace? Do you think this is false humility or true introspection? Why?
a. Paul has described himself in various ways throughout his epistles: Read Philipians 3:5-6; 1 Corinthians 15:9; and Ephesians 3:8 to see his progression to 1 Timothy 1:15. Does it seem as if his view of his need for Christ has increased? If so, what would you attribute this to?
b. As you have grown closer to Jesus, what awareness do you have of your need for a savior? Do you possess a new identity in Christ? In what way? …and filling us with both humility and confidence.
3. Read 1 Timothy 1:16-20. What reason does Paul say he received mercy? If true, what encouragement can we take from this? Does Paul’s salvation speak more loudly than that of the other apostles? Why or why not?
a. Verse 17 gives a description of Paul’s understanding of who God is. Does this agree with your understanding? Why or why not?
b. In verse 18 Paul gives a “charge” or directive to Timothy. What do you believe Paul means when he says that this charge is given “in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you”?
c. Why are “faith and a good conscience” critical to being a Christian ministry leader as Timothy was asked to be? How do the lack of these qualities threaten our ability to witness to others?
d. Through humility Paul wants to inspire confidence in Timothy. How does the Gospel fill us with humility and confidence?
