First, a reminder. This will come in handy as we go through this today.
How to Read the Parables (A quick review)
We're currently exploring Jesus parables--short stories revealing eternal truths--and we're using a simple method to understand them:
1. Ask: What is the context of the story?
- Textual, historical, cultural, and in the moment of its telling
2. Being careful not to over-analyze, what are the themes?
3. What did Jesus say it meant? He often tells us what the stories were meant to teach, so don't overcomplicate it.
4. Be open-minded. Why do I need this lesson as much as they did?
(“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” - Jesus, Luke 8:8, ESV)

The Context
• They are likely still at Zacchaeus’ house (“As they heard these things…”).
• So it is still the same mixed crowd of the believers, the curious, and the critics.
• He is about to enter Jerusalem as the king, judge, and redeemer.

Key Phrases
v. 11 has a few:
• “…because he was near to Jerusalem…”
• “…because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.”
• “…because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
• v. 14, “We do not want this man to reign over us.” (See John 19:15)
• v. 17, “Because you have been faithful…”
• v. 26, “to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

This isn’t just talk.
• “Jesus is not just speaking about God, God’s kingdom, God’s return to Zion. Jesus is embodying it.” – N. T. Wright
• And if Jesus was this serious about the rejection in Jerusalem in the next week, how should we expect the 2nd Coming to go?

It finally comes down to this:
• What do you believe?
• Will you be faithful with God’s message, mission, and stewardship?
• What do you believe?
• Will you be faithful with God’s message, mission, and stewardship?
“It is always so, the gracious and faithful man obtains more grace and more means of usefulness, while the unfaithful man sinks lower and lower and grows worse and worse. We must either make progress or else lose what have attained. There is no such thing as standing still.”

ARE YOU READY TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS TODAY?
• It all begins with putting our faith in Christ. (Romans 1:16)
• We repent (meaning we put our past sins behind us and start following Jesus). (Acts 3:19)
• Confess that Christ is Lord (Romans 10:9).
• Mark the end of our old life and the beginning of the new life in Christ through baptism. (Acts 3:38-9; 22:16; Romans 6:3-4)
• From here on, Christ calls us to a life of loving God and loving our neighbors, growing in our knowledge of his word, and being led by his Spirit as we serve others for a bigger purpose, preparing one another for the life and reward ahead when we will meet him face to face.
