1. The Church PROPHESIED
2. The Church Foretold through Various TYPES and SYMBOLS
Moses would like to have seen the New Testament Church and PRIESTHOOD, 1 Peter 2:5-9.
Isaiah would love to have seen PENTECOST, Isaiah 28:10-12.
Joel would like to have been in the UPPER ROOM, Acts 1-2.
Enoch would love to see the translation of SAINTS, Jude 1:14-15.
Elijah and Elisha would like to see Christ’s MINISTRY, lepers cleansed and the dead raised.
Jonah would like to see Christ’s THREE-DAY experience, Matthew 12:39-40.
Abraham looked forward to the Lord’s COMING, John 8:56-58.
The Hebrew word for "community" is qāhāl, which the Greek translation of the Old Testament often renders as ekklēsia, "church" meaning a called-out assembly or worshipping community.
3. The Church was the RESULT of the Most Significant Transformation
of PEOPLE
A servant "Israel" took FLESH in the person of Jesus Christ. From the moment of His birth, He reenacted Israel's HISTORY, going down to Egypt so that He could be the true son whom God called out of Egypt.
Just as Israel passed through the RED Sea, Jesus passed through the
waters of BAPTISM, Matt 3, before being led out into the wilderness,
where He successfully faced the same temptations that Israel had failed
to ENDURE, Matt 4.
Jesus is the true VINE, the classic Old Testament image for Israel and we are His BRANCHES, John 15.
In Christ, we are "a chosen RACE, a royal priesthood, a holy NATION", 1 Peter 2:9-10.
Being part of this New Covenant Israel is not a matter of physical DESCENT from Abraham, but rather sharing Abraham's repentance and FAITH, Luke 3:8.
God has not forgotten His promises to those physically descended from Abraham. The Jews are the Jews & the Church is the Church. The Church has not replaced the Jews. But some of the Jews have become part of the Church.
The Lord's bride is the CHURCH and will one day be defiled by her sin no longer but beautifully adorned for her HUSBAND, Rev 21:2.

Talk About It

Discussion Questions:
1. What would you say was the main difference between the people of God in the Old Testament and God’s people today?
2. Can you help list a few of the ways that Jesus fulfilled prophecy from the Old Testament when He came to earth?
3. Why was the Church so necessary in God’s plan of redemption?
