Faith That Works - Week 6
James 3:1-12

This series:
Learning from James how to make our faith work in real life & helping others do the same.

Recap:
Week 1 - Trials
Week 2 - Temptation
Week 3 - Treatment of Others: Attitude & Action
Week 4 - Treatment of Others: Favoritism
Week 5 - Treatment of Others: Faith & Works
Week 6 - Taming the Tongue

Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. James 3:1

We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect (mature), able to keep their whole body in check. James 3:2

Truth 1 - The tongue is hard to control

When we put bits into the mouths of horsesto make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. James 3:3

Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. James 3:4

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. James 3:5

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. James 3:6

Truth 2 - The tongue is small but powerful

The tongue has the power of life and death… Proverbs 18:21

Write a confession:
Lord, forgive me...

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:7-8

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. James 3:9-10

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. James 3:11-12

Truth 3 - The tongue must be tamed

For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Luke 6:45

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. James 1:19

HOW TO TAME THE TONGUE: Go Slow & Let God in
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6

PCC Benediction
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out into the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born!
