And When You Have Turned Back
Matt. 26:57-58; 69-75
Mark 14:53-54; 66-72
Luke 22:54-62
John 18:15-18; 25-27
Pastor Jerry Koller
Setting: After the Passover meal, Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn and headed to the Mount of Olives. When they arrived, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him to keep watch while He prayed. Unfortunately, they fell asleep on the Job—twice. After Jesus prayed for the third time, He returned to find the three still sleeping. He woke them up because His betrayer had arrived along with a great crowd that had come to arrest Him.
After Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, soldiers stepped forward to take Jesus. Peter sees what is taking place and he draws his sword and starts swinging. He makes contact with one of the High Priest’s servants cutting off his ear. Jesus chastises Peter’s action for He knew His arrest had to take place. In a moment of compassion, Jesus heals the servant’s ear.
Significance of mentioning that a rooster crowed:
· After the Passover meal was finished, and before the group arrived at the Garden, Jesus talked about many things. At one point, the disciples became entangled in a discussion as to who was going to be the greatest among them.
Jesus tells Peter that his three-fold denial will happen before the rooster crows. Then, Peter will remember this prediction Jesus made.
In Peter's case, the denial is the verbal expression of fear or anxiety, not a true heart-belief. You can make someone say something by force or coercion, but you cannot make them believe it in their heart.
You can make someone say something by force or coercion, but you cannot make them believe it in their heart.
· Jesus is talking about a confession of the heart that leads to salvation—not whether we are reluctant to sharing the Gospel in a more aggressive manner.
· When one truly confesses Jesus is Lord, forgiveness and salvation are given. Jesus confesses this reality before the Father.
· When one rejects the truth, when one denies Jesus is Lord, when one stands before God on judgement day, Jesus will deny before the Father that He knows them.
Every time we choose not to obey what Jesus commands, we deny Him.
Jesus told Peter: And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.
· His fear may have caused him to fall, but that doesn’t mean his faith failed him.
· Jesus knew Peter would turn back after his failure.
· His experience would be used to help strengthen the faith of his spiritual brothers.
Peter’s denial is not the last chapter in his book. This is not the end of the story. God was not finished with Peter yet. There were things he still had to do. This failure, like those prior, do not define him. And they will not defeat him.
The same holds true for us as well. We are not perfect. We all stumble and fall. We all, at some point, deny Jesus by our actions. When we do, may we grieve. May we weep. May we confess our sin to God. May we turn from it. May we turn back to obedience. And may we use our experiences to strengthen one another’s faith.

Fundraiser: Door Repairs and Replacement

GOAL: $14,400 | RAISED: $6850 If you have noticed when you enter the church through our main entrance, the outside steel doors are in rough shape. It has been determined that they need to be replaced. In addition, all the fire doors in the east wing need repair or adjustments; so do the double steel doors in the gym on the east side of the building. If there is any way you could contribute to this expense, it would be greatly appreciated. You can simply mark your donation with “Doors” and drop it in the offering on Sunday morning or make an online contribution at
