Nehemiah 4-5 Relishing the Power of Together
God’s Vision has always been about Together

1800 BC - God calls an old couple to start His new people = Abraham/Sarah
Promised Son

1400 BC - God calls an old fugitive to rescue His people in captivity = Moses
Provided Atonement/Deliverer

900 BC - God calls a young guy to unite His people as their king = David
Promised King

500 BC - God calls His people back from captivity by a pagan ruler = Cyrus
People Return Together

30 AD God incarnate, Jesus calls His new covenant people to be about Together
John 17 diversity united for mission
We want to be Relishing the Power of Together
Because God’s Vision has always been about Together

Together we can face change/fears/opposition by remembering God
The opposition: ridicule, intimidation, plans to disrupt
The response is immediate Prayer and Action
The guidance is applying the reality of God’s Word and Presence
American Culture is changing into individualism gone to weeds: (Rise and Triumph of Modern Self, Carl Truman)

How do we respond as followers of Jesus living in this 21st century American culture?
- Prayer together for ourselves, our church family, our culture
- Practical actions together of love, truth, humility
- Guidance together from God’s Word
A little bit of opposition can do a lot of clarifying good for our faith in Christ.
Do we believe in Jesus and identify with Him?
Are we willing to obey His teaching when it’s not popular, when it is ridiculed or despised?
Sequoias don’t grow alone; they only grow in a grove. That is by God’s design.

Christ followers don’t grow alone, we only grow together, that’s by God’s design.

Summer Reading

Got time for some summer reading? Here are recommended titles for your TBR lists:

Family Discipleship: Leading Your Home Through Time, Moments, and Milestones. Chandler and Griffin. 189 pages. This book will encourage and equip parents to be spiritual leaders in their home, enabling them to design a personalized discipleship plan focused on time, moments, and milestones. Each of these sections provides Scriptures to consider, questions to answer, simple practices to implement, and lots of ideas to try
out.

Winsome Conviction: Disagreeing Without Dividing the Church. Muehlhoff and Langer. 200 pages.
In the 21st century as throughout much of church history, Christians find they have differing views and convictions on a variety of social, political, and non-essential doctrinal issues. In our current polarized culture, American Christians face an ancient two headed beast: the insidious and antichrist problems of quarreling and disunity. How do we cultivate maturity to seek mutual understanding with the ability to agree to disagree on non-essential matters and live in unity as a witness for Christ?

Seven Things I Wish Christians Knew about the Bible. Michael F. Bird. 200 pages.
Being knowledgeable and confident in the inspiration, authority, authenticity of Scripture is a foundational component of our growing faith and ability to explain it to others. This is a short, readable introduction to how we got the Bible and why we are confident it is God’s Word.

A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption. Becket Cook. 190 pages.
A gay man in Hollywood with a successful career as a set designer, Cook rarely thought about God—until an unexpected encounter in a coffee shop changed his life forever. Part memoir, part apologetic, and an astute look at what the Bible says about homosexuality, the book is above all a witness to the power of the Gospel

Sent: Living a Life that Invites Others to Jesus. Heather and Ashley Holleman. 196 pages.
The Hollemans relate their experiences and provide practical ideas to develop skills for recognizing opportunities, asking good questions, having conversations and sharing the good news of Christ in ways that feel natural for us and are helpful to others.
