The Apathetic Season | Psalm 73

A. The Science of Apathy
1. Apathy is defined as the lack of motivation to form an intention, feeling, emotion, or concern. (ScienceDirect)
2. Apathy is considered a brain-behavior disorder.
3. Apathy can be a symptom caused by overexposure.
4. Apathy has been connected to the diminishing ability to love, to fear, to experience triumph, and hope alongside people.
“Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings.” Helen Keller
B. Biblical Apathy
1. An apathetic Asaph
2. An apathetic King David
3. God does not like apathy.
“Desire is half of life; indifference is half of death.” Kahlil Gibran
C. The Danger of Spiritual Apathy
1. Apathy causes familiarity—a weariness of God.
2. Apathy causes boredom—a hunger of happiness anywhere but in God.
3. Apathy causes mediocrity—a bare minimum faith.
4. Apathy causes disconnection--a lack of accountability.
5. Apathy causes passivity--a bend towards doing nothing.
D. The Cure for Spiritual Apathy
1. Seek out alone time in God's presence.
2. Avoid overexposure.
3. Know that where all of you ends, God is there as the Rock.
4. Trust in the mighty Creator.
Bottom Line: Unchecked apathy is a threat to our capacity to know and love people correctly.
