INTERVIEW
BIG IDEA - It takes faithfulness to God and others to live into our Ordinary Call
Joseph: Faithfulness to God = Obedience
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph, her husband, was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. Matthew 1:18-19
Joseph’s Obedience 1 - Marries Mary
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:20-21
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. Matthew 1:24-25
Joseph’s Obedience 2 - Goes to Egypt
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Matthew 2:13-15
Joseph’s Obedience 3 & 4- Goes back to Israel then Nazareth
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. Matthew 2:19-23
Listening and obeying God are keys parts of faithfulness
How is God calling you to obey in attitude or action? And how do you best hear the voice of the Father?
Father of the Lost Son: Faithfulness to others = Compassion
Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them… “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living… Luke 15: 11-16
“When he came to his senses… I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. …. So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. Luke 15: 17-20
BIG IDEA - It takes faithfulness to God (obedience) and others (compassion) to live into our Ordinary call.
"If we lack obedience and compassion, we will miss the call on our lives. And if we miss the call, we miss the personal blessing, public impact and praise due to God." --H.R. Brotherly

PCC Benediction
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out into the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born!
May you jump into the arms of Jesus.
And may He push you out into the world.
May you be healed as you participate in the healing of others.
Not because you must, but because you may.
This is why we were born!
Beyond Sunday
During this 9-week series, we will focus on what it means to be called by God. Simply put, we are Ordinary People with Ordinary Callings. We each have an ordinary call that takes a unique shape in a specific place. Our ordinary call is 3-fold: Loving God & others (Connection), making disciples (Multiplication) and healing a broken world (Restoration). The SHAPE it takes is based on our Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences. The place we find ourselves is where God has positioned us in the world for His work to be completed. The place we find ourselves is where God has positioned us in the world. This week, we reflect on how it takes faithfulness in the form of obedience and compassion to live into our calling.
1. In what way do you find yourself more aware that you have a 3-fold call on your life (see above)?
2. How did your earthly father reflect faithfulness through obedience to God and compassion to others? In what ways did his example benefit or harm you?
3. Read the story of Joseph and his faithful obedience in Matthew 1:18-25, Matthew 2:13-23. Identify the 4 dreams he obeys. What does this tell you about Joseph?
4. Where are you seeking to obey God? What holds you back? In what ways (actions or attitudes) is He calling you to obey? How do you hear from Him? (Word, others, circumstances, dreams, etc.)
5. Read the story about the father of the Lost Son and his faithful compassion in Luke 15:11-24. What impacts you the most about the story? What does compassion have to do with faithfulness to others and obedience to God?
6. Reflect on this quote, then choose to thank, confess, or ask God through prayer.
