Bible References:

2 Chronicles 6:38-39
Matthew 16:14-18
John 16:7
1 Corinthians 6:19
When we find life, where we expected to find death, it’s a world changing discovery.
“Religion” = Interactions that we have with God that are based on principles that God didn’t have in mind for us to interact with him through.
4 Markers of Religion:
1. Sin and Shame
2. Select People
3. Sacred Places
4. Suffocating Lists
Notes:
Implications:
1. Buildings are tools meant to fuel the mission.
2. People take priority.
Reflection Questions:
- Are there parts of the bible that you find to be boring? If so which ones?
- How were the three rooms of the “Temple Building” proper described for us Sunday?
- Read Leviticus 16:2, Numbers 7:89, 2 Kings 19:15.
o What does this teach us about the physical manifestation of God’s presence in the temple model?
o Is that strange to you?
o What implications did this have for worship for the Jews?
- Read Matthew 16:14-18.
- From Sunday’s discussion on Jesus and history, what did you learn about…
o what Jesus had in mind for “church”?
o how history impacted how we think about “church”?
- Read John 16:7, 1 Corinthians 6:19.
o Where does the visible manifestation of God reside now post resurrection?
- What are your thoughts of followers of Jesus being “God containers” or “Portable Temples”?
- Are there times where you have seen buildings become more important than mission?
- Are there times when you’ve seen places take priority over people?
- Are there ways that we do that at our church now?
