Expand1. From your message notes of Revelation 1:9-11, what stood out to you as surprising, challenging, encouraging, or confusing? Why?
2. John writes in Revelation 1:9 that we are partners in “the affliction, kingdom, and endurance that are in Jesus.” How does this concept contrast to what we’ve sometimes been wrongly told about the easy, carefree Christian life? Why is it so important—and ultimately rewarding—to understand and embrace this truth?
3. Read Philippians 2:12-17 as an example of being influential exiles in your world. What kind of personal traits are emphasized in this passage? What will cause you to stand out in our culture as a positive, Christ-shining influencer? How does that impact the One Life God has placed in your path?
4. Our passage includes the importance of both a vital connection with the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:19-26) AND a deep understanding and commitment to the Word of God (see Psalm 119:9-12; Matthew 4:4). What happens if one or the other is missing in your life? How does walking in the Spirit and in the Word powerfully transform and direct us? Give a personal example.
5. Review Revelation 1:1-11. How have the truths we’ve learned (so far in Revelation) helped you to survive and thrive in a challenging culture? Where do you feel pressure as a believer to conform to “the ways of world”? Or a temptation to compromise your values? How are you staying strong? What helps?
6. Easter is just around the corner. Can you pray for God to be glorified in a powerful Good Friday communion, a joyful celebration of the Resurrection, and opportunities to invite and bring friends and family?
