A Tale of Three Kings: David
Mastered By Brokenness

What would you do if your adversary was delivered into your hands?

Will you?
- Chunk their spears back in their direction
- Surrender the fight and take the easy way out
- Step out of the call for the better offer
- Give in to the crowd to fit in

David’s Advice From The Cave

#1 KNOW THAT GOD’S SCHOOL FOR THOSE HE CALLS LOOKS LESS LIKE HARVARD AND MORE LIKE HARD-KNOCKS

True Men/Women of God are rarely revealed in the best of times; they are revealed in the worst.

Adversity always has a unique way of reintroducing us to ourselves.

David was “A ______ King.”
(Good, Great, Godly, Warrior, Wise)

David was “A BROKEN KING”

Psalm 51:17 (ESV)
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

What Does God Want to Break In Us?
- Our Stubborn Will
- Our Selfish Ambition
- Our Prideful Flesh
- Our Self Righteousness

Why Would God Want To Crush Us?

10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.(2 Co 7:10).

What we do with the sorrow over our sin against the Lord is connected to our brokenness before the Lord

If we are broken, it leads us towards repentance
If we are unbroken, it leads us towards rebellion

In the crushing, we either harden our heart or soften our heart before the Lord.

#2 KNOW THAT NOT EVERYONE WHO INVOKES THE NAME OF GOD IS SPEAKING FOR GOD…

4 And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’

Resist the temptation to add spiritual wrapping paper to your own fleshly desires

Jeremiah 23:25–31 (ESV)
25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ 26 How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart…31 Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’

Don’t take GOD’S NAME IN VAIN to justify your actions, do what is right… God honors those who do the right thing.

Don’t Justify Your Decision, Make A Decision!

David would also advise you, NOT EVERYONE WHO INVOKES THE NAME OF GOD IS SPEAKING FOR GOD… BUT IF YOU LISTEN CLOSELY, YOU CAN STILL FIND HIS VOICE IN THAT SAME CAVE

Joab was right… David’s enemy was delivered into his hands, but Saul wasn’t David’s enemy. Saul was David’s king.

Don’t put the wrong face on your fight!

In the end, a king did die in that cave, but it wasn’t the king who lived in the palace, it was the king who lived in David’s heart

#3 REMEMBER HUMILITY IS THE ROAD THAT PRECEDES HONOR

And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.”

David caught Saul with his pants down. He found the king vulnerable and exposed and was tempted to take advantage of that moment.

David cut a piece of Saul’s royal robe. For the first time, he uncovered and lashed out against Saul.

David’s response to his sin was to humble himself before the king

2 Remarkable Things took place
Saul The Great Reemerged
David The Broken was Revealed

#4 DAVID WOULD REMIND YOU…AND I BELIEVE HE WOULD SAY FIRMLY FIX THIS FACT IN YOUR MIND, IT IS GOD AND GOD ALONE WHO RAISES ONE UP, AND LOWERS ANOTHER

Why would David place himself on the altar before Saul… Because He knew his life was in God’s hands, not Sauls

Daniel 2:21 (ESV)
21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;

Settle this in your mind… It is God, not You… not Someone else… not a Situation that is guiding your life

The ANOINTING ON YOUR LIFE IS NOT SECURED BY WHAT YOU SEE OR FEEL … IT IS SECURED BY WHAT YOU HEARD
