Messiah| Behind the Curtain Part 5

Messiah| Behind the Curtain Part 5

Long before Jesus set foot on our planet, before He ever took on human form, He had a purpose, personality, and presence that was prophesied in the Bible. As we look toward the Christmas season, we go behind the curtain to learn who Jesus really was.

Belief has incredible power, and in some ways, we are believing in the same story that the people of Israel were believing in for literally thousands of years…that Jesus Christ is born.

Christ is a Greek word translated from the Hebrew word, “Messiah.” It is more of a title than a name, coming from a compilation of Old Testament scriptures.

It means “anointed” and it was reserved for prophets, priests, and kings, of which Jesus was all three, although people either didn’t recognize Him or completely rejected Him.

Jesus didn’t match the story they had developed in their heads and hearts. His prophecy, priesthood, and kingdom were often demonstrated in ways they didn’t recognize or understand.

Jesus, however, showed His authority and sovereign power of nature by His miracles.

Of all of those miracles, there is only one that is repeated in all 4 gospel records - the feeding of the 5000.

This miracle is unique:

1. It is the only miracle in which someone contributed something to what He did.
2. It is the only miracle in which He asks His disciples questions.
3. It has the most people involved of any miracle.
4. It is the only miracle in which the Israelites attempted to crown Him as King.

What was it about this miracle that moved the people to action?

Was it the fulfillment of the Prophecy in Ezekiel 34 that the Messiah would feed His people like a shepherd feeds his sheep? Or its reminiscence to the stories of Moses and God feeding the people in the wilderness?

It was a leader who could meet their most basic needs with no effort on their part. They proved this in the next chapter of John, asking for their next meal. If Jesus could do a miracle like that, what couldn’t He provide?

We are inclined to look at our most felt and immediate need instead of the One who will provide us with what we truly need.

They wanted to make Him king but Jesus didn’t come to earth to be crowned by sinful people. He came here to be crucified for sinful people!

Behind the curtain, God was being the King that we needed, not the one that we wanted.
