A Rags to Riches Story

(Lk 14:7–11) Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like this… if you want to go up, learn to go down. He elevates the humble and humbles the elevated!

Old Testament Rags To Riches Story

(2 Sa 9:1–8). And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” 4 The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” 5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. 6 And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” 7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” 8 And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?”

THE THREE POSITIONS THIS CRIPPLED SON OF KING FINDS HIMSELF IN

#1 A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS HAD DEMOTED A KING’S SON TO THE SEAT OF A DEAD DOG

vs 8 And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?”

Here was Mephibosheth’s Dilemma

- He was a Displaced Son

- He came from a Disgraced Family

- He had A Devastating past

- He lived in A Desolate place

- He was in a Desperate Situation

#2 A COVENANT WITH A KING’S SON PROMOTED THIS SON TO A SEAT AT THE KING’S TABLE

13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king’s table. Now he was lame in both his feet. (2 Sa 9:13).

David made four uncommon moves on this sons behalf

1) David moved first

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses (Col 2:13).

2) David moved by obligation

"even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him" (Ephesians 1:4).

3) David moved with Grace

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Eph 2:8–9).

4) David moved with generosity

"he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved" (Ephesians 1:4–6).

- He sent the invitation
- He brought him into his family
- He moved him from poverty to peace

#3 THE SACRIFICE OF A KING PROMOTED THIS SON TO THE KING’S SEAT

“and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father…9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s grandson. 10 And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master’s grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall always eat at my table" (2 Samuel 9:7–10).

Ziba was the Dirty Rotten Scoundrel of the story

* He was manipulative
* He was resentful
* He was deceitful

In Sauls absence, Ziba had taken up residence in the king's seat

The king humbled the exalted and exalted the humble

The king’s son limped in an impoverished cripple, he walked out an exceedingly blessed man

What a great salvation we have!

4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
(Eph 2:4–7)

You have been upgraded from the seat of a dead dog to the king's seat!
