The book of Hebrews is written to a second generation Christian community.

Close enough to see the flame. Far enough away to not feel the warmth.

We could perhaps look at Hebrews as a Christian introduction to the Old Testament. Israel’s scriptures were always looking ahead to something - a new covenant, new priesthood, new altar, a better sacrifice, a city to which the present Jerusalem would only be a signpost. We could summarize Hebrews this way - the scriptures had always pointed ahead to something new and better, and it has now arrived in Jesus. - N.T. Wright

Jesus is the -

Creator - the one through whom all things came into being.

Sustainer -The one who created is the one who is committed to re-creating.

Heir - he is the deed holder to all of creation.

Reflection of God and exact imprint - when we look at Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, we see the exact reflection of God. He is the exact imprint of the one who sent him. He is the mold from which all others can be reshaped.

Pioneer of salvation. The author of Hebrews sets forth in Chapter 2 the underlying reason for Jesus’ incarnation. Salvation. It is a reminder that without intervention we are headed down a path that no one will deem good, or wise, or fruitful.
