“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray then like this: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.” Matthew 6:7-13

“For What It’s Worth” Buffalo Springfield
Revolutionary events are often accompanied with a song, anthem, or poem.
The Lord’s Prayer is revolutionary, inviting people into an intimate and intense relationship with God.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
As The Template or A Template?
We should not view this prayer as restrictive, but a resource.
1/ “Our Father, who art is heaven, hallowed be Thy name.”
2/ “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
3/ “Give us this day our daily bread…”
4/ “…and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.”
5/ “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
6/ “For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.”
AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION…
Trials or Tests or Temptations?
1/ Trials are meant to bring out the best in us.
Trials and tests are related, but different. Trials may not necessarily be from the Lord.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4, ESV
These trials will show that your faith is genuine. 1 Peter 1:7, NLT
2/ Tests are meant to prove us.
God tested Abraham. Genesis 22:1, ESV
3/ Temptations are meant to bring out the worst in us.
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and He Himself tempts no one. James 1:13, ESV
Understanding Temptations
…we are not ignorant of (the devil’s) devices. 2 Corinthians 2:11, NKJV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. Genesis 3:1, ESV
We must understand our weaknesses and his strategies against us.
2/ Temptation is a force.
Sin is crouching at your door. It desires to have you, but you must master it. Genesis 4:7, NIV
“Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it.” C.S. Lewis
Overcoming Temptations
1/ Fight.
Jesus is seen fighting temptation with the Word of God.
For the word of God is alive and powerful. Hebrews 4:12, NLT
2/ Flee.
Joseph is seen fleeing from temptation.
Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. 2 Timothy 2:22, NLT
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV
We will never outgrow the struggle against temptation.
3/ Fall.
Esau, David, and Judas are seen falling into temptation.
Idols over promise and under deliver every time.
But in the event we don’t and we fall, there is hope!
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:1-16, NIV
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL…
In this, we ask for mercy, protection, and deliverance on many levels.
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER, AND THE GLORY, FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN.
This serves as a bookend, breeding confidence that our loving God is in control!
