“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray then like this: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.” Matthew 6:7-13

SCRIPTURE

INTRO

As we mature in the Lord, our prayer life deepens and develops.

All glory to Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding His blood for us. Revelation 1:5, NLT

FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES…

Sins or Trespasses or Debts?

1/ Sins: carries the idea of rebellion.

2/ Debts: carries the idea of owing something we cannot pay.

“I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake and I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25, ESV

3/ Trespasses: carries the idea of crossing a line we should not cross.

“Lord, we have all gone places we had no right to be. We trampled on people’s lives in the process. Forgive us. We also forgive those whose unlawful entry trampled on us.” Mark Rutland

The Reality of Salvation

1/ We’re Saved from Penalty of Sin.

2/ We’re Being Saved from Power of Sin.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12, ESV

3/ We Will Be Saved from Presence of Sin.

The Practice of Repentance

Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” Jeremiah 6:16, ESV

1/ Search the Heart.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalm 139:23-24, NLT

In God’s mercy, He will remind us of past offenses we have committed.

It is good for us to be reminded of our sinfulness. It is both humbling and honoring.

2/ Say It.

“We conquer sin by confessing it to death.” Ray Ortlund

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9, NIV

3/ Set Boundaries.

4/ Seek Help.

5/ Start Again

The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. Proverbs 24:16, NLT

AS WE FORGIVE THEM THAT TRESPASS AGAINST US

The Practice of Forgiveness

1/ I must learn to repeatedly forgive myself.

Denying oneself forgiveness may sound noble, but it isn’t. It is counterproductive to the work of God.

2/ I must learn to repeatedly forgive God (if necessary).

God doesn’t need our forgiveness, but we must process when offended by God’s action or inaction.

3/ I must learn to repeatedly forgive others.

Getting forgiveness is somehow tied to giving forgiveness. It is vertical and horizonal.

What Forgiveness Is and Is Not

1/ Forgiveness is not excusing or condoning the offense but acknowledging it.

2/ Forgiveness is not removing consequences but removing revenge.

Consequences are a necessary part of development.

“Because Jesus gave up His right to retaliate against me, I will give up my right to retaliate against them.”

3/ Forgiveness is not offering reconciliation but offering peace.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18, NIV

Some people do not need continued access to your life.

4/ Forgiveness is not the ending of hurt but the beginning of healing.

Forgiveness often requires significant time. In this, God allows us to identify with Christ and the weight of sin He forgave.

5/ Forgiveness is not forgetting the offense but releasing it.
Some things need to be forgotten. Some things cannot and should not be forgotten. All things need to be released into the hands of the Lord.

6/ Forgiveness is not optional but a command.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32, NIV

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13, NIV

Unforgiveness is like drinking of cup of poison and expecting the other person to die.

We must forgive even when they don’t ask for it. Forgiveness is as much for me as it is for them.

7/ Forgiveness is not an emotion but a choice of the will.

Our ability to forgive reveals whether we have internalized God’s forgiveness for us.

“To the same measure I forgive ____________________, Lord forgive me.”

“Daddy, it’s a new day!”
