“How to Judge without Being Judgmental”
- WeALL make judgments!
- MOTIVES factor strongly into the judgments we make!
- Many of us are simply UNAWARE that we are displaying a judgmental attitude.
- OVERGENERALIZING can be very problematic regarding being judgmental!
- RELATIONSHIPS affect how our judgements and made!

“If we want to stand FOR something, we have to stand AGAINST other things. If you want to AFFIRM something, make a PROPOSAL or CAST a vote, you
HAVE to pass judgment.”
HAVE to pass judgment.”
Be OBEDIENT!
If our lives are controlled by anything other than the one who gives life then we have been robbed, we are being destroyed, and we are dying slowly and unnecessarily!
We define EXTERNAL appearance
as one’s INTERNAL identity!
as one’s INTERNAL identity!
REMEMBER God!
Would we wish God to judge us with
the measure we judge others?
the measure we judge others?
EVALUATE yourself!
GRACE!
The only difference between us and
any other sinner is the grace
of God at work in us.
any other sinner is the grace
of God at work in us.
But for the grace of God there go I!
TRUTH!
“The goal of righteous judgment is to bring another person closer to God.”
God’s WORD!
Biblical judgment must be a part
of the life of every Christian.
of the life of every Christian.
HUMILITY!
WISDOM!
“Be careful not to measure your
holiness by other people’s sins.”
Martin Luther
holiness by other people’s sins.”
Martin Luther
Discuss and Reflect
Big Idea
I am pretty confident that most of us are familiar with the idiom, “Curiosity killed the cat…” but most of us don’t know the second half of the statement, “…but satisfaction brought it back.” So, we use the first half of the saying as a warning: Be careful of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation! But the second part -- "satisfaction brought it back" -- shows that the risk might be worth it. It is our hope that this series, “Curious: God’s Answers to Your Curious Questions” will eliminate any “danger” that you might associate with a curious question, and then when we see God’s answer the “risk” we’ve taken will indeed be worth it! Today, “How to Judge without Being Judgmental!”
Discussion Questions
- Review the scriptures, the main points, watch or listen online to the message from this past weekend. What is the most significant point for you? Why?
- Judgment is a big deal! Share some examples of how you have judged others knowingly or unknowingly. Have you ever been the target of someone else’s judgment? How did that make you feel?
- Of the five steps of self-evaluation, grace, truth, God’s word, humility, and wisdom, which is the most difficult for you to apply in your opportunities to not be judgmental? Why? Which is the easiest? Why?
- Discuss specks and planks. Give an example of how this word picture is experienced in real life and its impact.
Next Steps
Jesus begins Matthew 7 with a very clear command, “Do not judge…” The chances are good that you will be faced with an occasion to judge someone this week. How can you be obedient to this command this week? How will you apply the right judgement to the situations you will face?
Prayer Focus
Along with praying for the needs in your group, please pause and pray for our nation. We seem to be more polarized as a nation than ever before. I realize every generation may have a similar perspective on current events, yet the division we are witnessing is troubling. Also, pray for next weekend as we tackle the topic of grief. Many are in the throes of sorrow over loss and hurt; a sense of hopelessness is overwhelming. But God has an answer. Pray that many will be helped and healed as we share this powerful topic.
