Living Biblically in a Crazy World

Have you noticed anything weird in our culture?

Big Idea: Normal for you will always be different from our world

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:9-12 NLT – 9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” 11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

What makes you different as a follower of Christ?

o You have been Chosen

§ 1 Peter 2:9 NLT - …for you are a chosen people.

§ John 15:16 NLT – 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.

o Highly Valued

§ 1 Peter 2:9 NLT – You are a royal priests…

§ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT – 19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

§ 2 Corinthians 5:19-21 NLT – 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

o Called out of Darkness

§ 1 Peter 2:9 NLT … for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

§ 1 Peter 2:1 NLT – So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.

§ 1 Corinthians 13:11 NLT – 11 When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.

§ Isaiah 5:20 NLT – 20 What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.

o Temporary Residents

§ 1 Peter 2:11 NLT – 11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

§ John 15:18-19 NLT – 18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.

Do you realize who you are in Christ?

o 1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV – 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Next Steps

o Memorize: John 15:16 NLT – You didn’t choose me. I chose you.
o Evaluate: Am I trying to be normal when God’s word has already called me to live differently than the world?
o Action: Be who God has created you to be. Rest in the fact that normal for you is different than the world’s normal.
