PRAY LIKE JESUS: 1 SEPTEMBER 1, 2021
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13
In the Old Testament, God was not viewed as a personal Father, but as a national Father.
Of all the titles Jesus could’ve used, He chose “Father.”
1/ In a general sense, we are all the children of God.
So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27, ESV
2/ In a personal sense, some are not the children of God.
…we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. Ephesians 2:3, ESV
3/ In another personal sense, all can be the children of God.
For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26, NLT
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” A.W. Tozer
God is the perfection of, not the reflection of, our earthly fathers.
Fathers can be a barrier or a bridgeway in our understanding
Types of Fathers: Louie Giglio
1/ Absent Father
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—this is God, whose dwelling is holy. Psalm 68:5, NLT
2/ Abusive Father
…with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer. Isaiah 54:8, NLT
3/ Performance Based Father
God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9, NLT
4/ Passive Father
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Luke 12:7, NLT
5/ Antagonistic Father
If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31, ESV
6/ Empowering Father
“God’s way is perfect.” 2 Samuel 22:31, NLT
“…your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48, NLT
Abba Father vs Grandfather
“If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. …[For] ‘Father’ is the Christian name for God.” J.I. Packer, Knowing God
OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN…
Levels of Supremacy
God has complete and perfect knowledge.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the One to Whom we are accountable. Hebrews 4:13, NLT
God is at every place in every moment.
I can never escape from Your Spirit! I can never get away from Your presence! If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I go down to the grave, You are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there Your hand will guide me, and Your strength will support me. Psalm 139:7-10, NLT
God is sovereign over all things.
“I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2, ESV
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. Hebrews 1:3, ESV
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26, ESV
Run By Rules: “I messed up. My Dad is going to kill me.”
Run By Relationship: “I messed up. I need to call my Dad.”
OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME…
God must be approached as a relational Father with reverential fear.
The Jews write “G—D” and call Him “haShem” because His name is considered so holy.
