Juan 14:16-17

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
GETTING STARTED
To the facilitator: Use this section to introduce the topic. If possible, give a brief recap of the sermon.
Share a memorable point, a spiritual lesson, a personal application, a question, or something that challenged you from the sermon last Sunday.
What is one truth and one lie about you? Let others guess which is what.
GROUP DISCUSSION
Read John 10:24-30.
1. What were the people challenging Jesus to do in verse 24? What was really their motivation (see John 10:31,39)? What really is the biggest problem of the Jews (religious leaders) against Jesus? In what way do people today struggle with the truth about our Lord Jesus Christ?
2. Read John 10:1-5. What are the dynamics of the shepherd-sheep relationship as pointed out by Christ? Is it really possible to hear the voice of God today? How do you discern and confirm if you are hearing from the Lord or not?
3. Read John 10:14,27 and discuss what this quote means: “Hearing God is just as much about our identity as it is about our ability to listen.”
4. What are some of the ideas and practices that people today associate with what it means to follow Jesus? Can you think of some personal implications of the cost for us believers in being followers of Jesus Christ in regards to making him the first love of our lives and not allowing anything else to take his place?
5. What one area of your life today would you honestly say that you are growing as a follower of Christ? (Be specific.)
6. What stands out to you about the Good Shepherd’s actions in John 10:27-28? Read also John 6:44 and 15:16. According to these verses, what is of key importance in a person being a Christian? Why should it encourage us that it is God’s choice, not our own, that makes the first move?
7. (Optional.) What would you say to someone who is afraid to lose their salvation? Conversely, how should we think about people who once claimed to be Christians but has now walked away?
[Next Steps]
The most secure place in the world is to be a son/daughter in the family of God.
- I will seek to grow in my relationship with Christ by ________________.
- I will seek to grow in my obedience to God.
- I will rest secured in Christ’s finished work on the cross.
Don’t forget to:
- Go through the devotionals everyday this week.
- Have a regular daily time of prayer and reading of God’s Word.
- Commit 30 minutes a day for God’s intervention in this fight against the COVID virus.
CLOSING THE SESSION
Close the session by taking the time to pray for one another. Consider the following as you pray:
- Pray for a growing confidence in Jesus’ finished work and that this may give you peace and greater motivation to live for him.
- Take the time to pray for our nation, for peace and for the gospel to prosper during this time of the pandemic.
- Pray for those who are hurting, going through fear, worry and anxiety in the group.
- Pray for your unsaved family, friends and loved ones.
