Hating and Clinging
Romans 12:9b
Pastor Jerry Koller
Abhor what is evil. (NASB & ESV)
God hates certain things.
Examples of Hating Sin:
· Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 97:10)
· To fear the LORD is to hate evil... (Prov. 8:13)
· Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good... (Amos 5:14-15)
You cannot love God and evil at the same time.
· You cannot worship God properly without hating evil.
Evil is as old as man.
How can we groom ourselves to hate evil rather than embrace it? The way to hate evil is to Cling to What is Good.
· to glue or bind together; to be joined.
There are many examples in Scripture as to what is good.
In general terms, you can say that doing good is following what God requires.
God’s works and ways are perfect.
· He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. (Deut. 32:4)
· As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless... (2 Sam. 22:31)
· As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless… (Psalm 18:30)
As the Prophet Micah stated, He has showed you, O man, what is good.
· What is good has been revealed to us.
· It is not something that is beyond our knowledge or comprehension.
· It is something He wants us to cling to or become inseparably joined with.
The key to clinging is knowing what is good.
· To know, we have to learn.
APPLICATION
This brings us back to today’s Scripture: Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. (Romans 12:9b)
This brings us back to Jesus’ command: As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34)
This brings us back to the truth that Love must be sincere. (Romans 12:9a)
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (John 13:34-35)… with a sincere love.
