What's So Good About God's Word?
80% of Americans express concern about the nation’s moral condition… At the same time 60-75% of Americans believe TRUTH is subjective and determined by the individual.
This generation is like a man lost at sea, a sea of moral relativism, they are at the mercy of cultural tides with nothing solid to anchor to and nothing firm to stand on.
God's word is dry ground, a firm foundation upon which to build a good life!
How do we communicate God’s Word to our children and this generation when they reject absolute truth?
We must do more than share the WHAT, we must also answer the WHY and show them the WHO
AS PARENTS/LEADERS … WE MUST TEACH OUR CHILDREN WHAT GOD’S WORD SAYS
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
(Mt 5:17–20)
Ex 20:2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me.”
God introduces himself through his law. (PRECEPTS)
The aim was not INDOCTRINATION it was an INTRODUCTION
Precept - a rule, a law, a decree, an ordinance, or moral code
- God’s law was GOOD
- God’s law was GUIDANCE
- God’s law was a GIFT
Rom 7:12 the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good
Give your children the gift of God’s Word and give them the gift of seeing you in His Word!
AS PARENTS/LEADERS … WE MUST HELP OUR CHILDREN ANSWER WHY GOD’S WORD SAYS WHAT IT SAYS
Every rule as a reason! Every What has a WHY! Every Precept has a principle!
Matt 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ (PRECEPT) 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. (PRINCIPLE)
Matt 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ (PRECEPT) 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (PRINCIPLE) 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Principle - fundamental truth that serves as the basis of a belief
By design, our children want to know the WHY behind the WHAT
Don't fight it, use it!
It's called discipleship and true discipleship begins in the home.
God doesn’t bring his law into our lives to RESTRICT us… but to RELEASE us
AS PARENTS… WE MUST SHOW OUR CHILDREN WHO SAID WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS AND WHY HE SAID IT
7:24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
(Mt 7:24–29)
God's word is a rock, a foundation that doesn’t move, even in the most significant of storms. Jesus said you can build a good and great life upon His word.
There is a key relationship for every rule. The principle, and the precept is based on a character trait of a PERSON
Jesus was the revelation of the Father. Jesus Christ is perfect theology!
Biblical moral truths must be placed within the context of a loving relationship if they are to be passed on effectively to the next generation. And that requires engagement in a continual process. - Josh McDowell
"Because I said so!" is only as effective as far as you know the "I" who said it!
Matt 5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
The Pharisees where concerned with the DOING
Jesus was concerned with the BEING
When we simply state the law and use it as tool to discipline rather than disciple, we cause people to stay distant from God.
Rules without Relationship always leads to Rebellion
I will never see the law as GOOD until I see that GOD is GOOD
Learning the ways of God is about more than knowing the IDENTITY of our Creator, its also about learning the IDENTITY of those He created in His Image
