MIRACLES & MEANING: HEALING THE BLIND MAN
June 23, 2021

SCRIPTURE
As He went along, He saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” After saying this, He spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” He told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked. He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.

(Following interrogation & insults) He replied, “Whether He is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.

(After finding the man) Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Some Pharisees who were with Him heard Him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.” John 9, ESV

WHAT THIS MIRACLE REVEALS ABOUT GOD

1/ This miracle reveals that Jesus understands our innate brokenness.

Some believed in life before conception.

Some believed children could sin in the womb.

Some believed the sin of parents transferred to children.

The man’s condition is a result of Sin, but not a result of sin.

2/ This miracle reveals that Jesus operates in two realms.

Jesus is sending a spiritual message through physical means.

A person can see in the physical and be blind in the spiritual. And vice versa.

Sadly, instead of this miracle striking awe, it strikes up an argument.
The mud irritates the man’s physical eyes in the same way that Jesus’ message irritates the religious leaders’ spiritual eyes.

In the end, all that matters is this: “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

3/ This miracle reveals that Jesus can transform bad into good for us, good for others, and glory for Himself.

“Sometimes God allows what He hates in order to accomplish what He loves.” Joni Eareckson Tada (paralyzed for more than 50 years)

The man’s blindness brought sight to many. God may use our suffering for the good of others.

We must not be short-sighted in our view of suffering. Physical healing is temporal, while spiritual healing is eternal.

4/ This miracle reveals that Jesus’ graces cannot be earned.

“My father is the king! He is far too wealthy to sell anything he owns. You can have this fruit for free or not at all.”

Our ability to earn can never match His ability to give!

5/ This miracle reveals that Jesus’ timing is perfect.

Why does He allow a man to be paralyzed for 38 years, another to live blind into adulthood, or to wait 4 days to raise Lazarus?!

The timing of God can be confusing! But even when He’s late, He’s on time!

6/ This miracle reveals that Jesus’ ways are mysterious.

Jesus heals many different people in many different ways. There seems to be an intentional inconsistency to His method.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isa 55:8-9, NIV
