MIRACLES & MEANING: HEALING THE LAME MAN
June 2, 2021
SCRIPTURE
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been inn that condition a long time, [Jesus] said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. John 5:1-18, NKJV
THE POOL OF BETHESDA
The Pool of Bethesda’s existence was challenged, until re-discovered in 1888.
Bethesda: house of mercy; place of two pools
WHAT THIS MIRACLE REVEALS ABOUT GOD
1/ This miracle reveals that Jesus intends to fulfill Messianic prophecy.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:17-19, ESV
The five porches bind the physically sick in the same way the five books of Moses bind the spiritually sick (Augustine).
2/ This miracle reveals that Jesus is compassionate.
“Do you want to be made well?” This is a compassionate question. Jesus knows healing will bring new responsibilities.
Jesus compassionately heals him despite the man’s excuses.
There is no evidence this man was saved or forgiven. It is possible to be healed for earthly life, but not for eternal life.
3/ This miracle reveals that Jesus is greater than the Law.
The Sabbath is an overlooked gift from God, but the Jews made an idol of it.
The Jews did not want to be slaves to work, but ironically became slaves to rest.
Jesus could have come a day later or a day earlier, but He was making a point that He is superior to the Law of Moses.
Rules are necessary, but relationship is supreme.
4/ This miracle reveals that Jesus heals some and not others.
Up to 3,000 sick may have been there, but Jesus only healed 1 man.
This is a majestic mystery, but we are rest assured that Jesus will heal all on that day!
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And He who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Revelation 21:4-5, ESV
5/ This miracle reveals that Jesus validates consequences.
We do not know this man’s sin, but Jesus warns him not to repeat it. If he does, worse consequences may befall him.
Consequences do not nullify God’s love or forgiveness.
6/ This miracle reveals that Jesus always empowers us to do what He commands.
