In this passage of God’s Word, we see Jesus and His disciples meet a man who possessed by many demons. Jesus has just been teaching His disciples about what it means to respond to God in a faithful way, and now they are experiencing it firsthand. By taking a close look at this story, we too can learn about what it means to respond to God in a faithful manor.
We need to realize that:
1. Our faith is more than intellect
Luke 8:28, James 1:27, 2:19, Matt. 7:21-23
2. “Normal things” can hold our faith captive
Luke 8:34-37, John 8:34, 2 Tim. 2:14-26, 2 Pet. 2:17-19, 2 Cor. 10:5
3. Faith demands we share the good news
Luke 8:38-39, Matt. 9:37-38, 28:19-20, Rom. 1:16
Reflection Questions

1. Do you struggle with either over emphasizing or under emphasizing demonic activity? If so, which one and why? How can you keep a more Biblical view?
2. In this story, even the demons acknowledged that Jesus was the Son of God. Do you struggle with turning your faith into a purely intellectual exercise? If so, how? If not, do you struggle under emphasizing certain theological truths?
3. The people of the town were held captive by their business of raising pigs, which would have been a very normal business of a gentile person during that time. Do you ever feel like your faith is hindered by completely “normal” things? If so, what are those things, and why do they hinder your faith?
4. Jesus charged the man that had previously had demons in him to go home and declare what God had done for him. Who in your life could benefit from hearing what God has done in your life?
