Matthew 3:1-12
“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Matthew 3:11
1. THE BAPTISM OF WATER
Two types of water baptism in the Gospels:
• John’s Baptism: of REPENTANCE in anticipation of Messiah.
• Jesus’ Baptism: of REGENERATION in proclamation of Messiah.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”
Matthew 28:19
2. THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Holy Spirit is WITH us to lead us to Jesus.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 14:16-17
• Holy Spirit comes IN us when we accept Jesus.
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
John 20:19-22
• Holy Spirit comes UPON us as we are empowered.
…Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
3. THE BAPTISM OF FIRE
His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Matthew 3:12
In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
1 Peter 1:6-7
See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction
.Isaiah 48:10
Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
Proverbs 17:3
