Upon meeting the disciples in Ephesus, Paul's next question was, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
“We didn’t know there was!”
Paul was shocked… Something didn’t add up. How can you have one without the other? How can you minister? How can you follow Jesus? How can you encounter the Gospel and not receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit!
He then asks, “Into what then were you baptized?”
Paul's template for ministry as demonstrated in Acts 19 was
1) an encounter with Jesus Christ
2) an encounter with the Holy Spirit
You can not separate Pentecost from the Gospel
Four reasons we need a fresh Pentecost
We need Pentecost because:
1) PENTECOST IS THE FULL GOSPEL
vs 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?”
Pentecost is as essential to the Gospel as air is to breathing

Paul asked into what were you baptized, because if it came without pentecost, it’s not the full gospel
We need Pentecost because:
2) PENTECOST DISRUPTS THE STALE SPIRITUAL STATUS QUO
Acts 19:8–9 (ESV)
8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 9 But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.
Three Responses
- Became Stubborn
- Continued in Unbelief
- Spoke Evil
Pentecost offends the stubborn and stiff necked
Pentecost offends the sophisticated intellectual unbeliever
Pentecost offends the Critics and Complainers
We need Pentecost because:
3) PENTECOST SHAKES A SINFUL SECULAR SYSTEM
23 About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the confusion
(Ac 19:23–29)
- No Celebrities in Pentecost
- No Compromise with Pentecost
- No Clearance Sale in Pentecost
We need Pentecost because:
4) PENTECOST IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
Paul's second question, "Did you receive the Holy Spririt when you believed?"
Receiving Pentecost Is Simple
Repent and Believe (Acts 2:38)
Ask with Expectation (Luke 11:9-13)
Tarry until you Receive (Luke 24:49)
We need Pentecost because:
