“Just As He Said” 4.4.21

Matthew 28:5-7 NASB And the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

1 Corinthians 15:13, 14, 16-20 NASB But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, your faith also is in vain. 16For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised; 17and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19If we have hoped in Christ only in this life, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20But the fact is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.

Four Non-negotiable Facts:

1. I need a Savior.

A. Isaiah 53:5-6 NASB But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; The punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him, And by His wounds we are healed. 6 All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the wrongdoing of us all to fall on Him.

B. Romans 3:2, 23 NASB but it is the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

C. Four foundations of faith

1) God is the Loving Creator and I am the apex of creation.

2) Mankind fell into depravity through willful rebellion against God (this is called sin).

3) God sent Jesus to redeem mankind from the curse of sin.

a. Jesus is God.
b. He was born of a virgin.
c. He lived a sinless life.
d. He died a substitutionary death.
e. He was physically raised from the dead and ascended to Heaven.

4) Salvation (forgiveness and redemption) is given to those who repent and accept Jesus as the payment for their sin.

2. The Savior is Jesus.

A. Acts 4:12 NASB And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”
B. John 14:6 NASB Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.”

C. John 20:30-31 NASB So then, many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in His name.

D. John 5:24 NLT “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”

3. Jesus is Alive.

A. Luke 24:13-50 NLT That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. 14As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. 16But God kept them from recognizing him.17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along? ”They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. 18Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” 19“What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. 20But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago. 22“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. 23They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! 24Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”25Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” 27Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. 30As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! 32They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” 33And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, 34who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.” 35Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread. 36And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. 37But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! 38“Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt? 39Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.” 40As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he ate it as they watched. 44Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 4546And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. 47It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ 48You are witnesses of all these things. 49“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” 50Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. 52So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. 53And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.

4. Your mind and heart must be opened to Truth by The Holy Spirit.

A. Faith is a result of The Holy Spirit working through Scripture.

B. The Spirit alone can convince us of truth.

C. John 16:8 NLT “And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

D. THERE MUST BE A SUPERNATURAL WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

1) John 6:35-37 NASB Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me will never be thirsty. 36But I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe. 37Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out.

E. The indwelling Spirit gives us assurance.

1) I have an external assurance. 1 John 3:4 NASB “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.”

2) I have an internal assurance.Romans 8:16 NASB The Spirit Himself testifies (bears witness) with our spirit that we are children of God,

3) I have an eternal assurance.Romans 10:9-11 NASB “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.”
