Gateway Church (Parkesburg Campus) March 7, 2021

This March as we approach our April celebrations of Good Friday and Easter, we invite you to engage in a series of conversations inspired from the "Passion Week" of Jesus, as recorded in Matthew's Gospel. We will look at the events and personalities leading up to the crucifixion, and celebrate victory over death through the resurrection of our LORD. Jesus was put on trial in the 1st century, but when we immerse ourselves in His story, and identify with Peter, Judas, and all the people involved in the "Passion Week", we find clarity. When we realize that the entire human race is really on trial, we see ourselves more clearly, Our hope is that you will see yourself in the betrayal, abandonment, accusation, and punishment of Jesus...because if you do, you will learn why Jesus came, and why He had to do what He did.

Alabaster is referred to as one of the precious stones used in the decoration of Solomon’s temple (1 Chron. 29:2). It was strong enough to keep the oil or perfume completely contained until it’s used.

Spikenard symbolized the very best in ancient cultures. It had a strong symbolism for marriage, a way to display their true love.

Spikenard was also bought by prostitutes, to flaunt– by way of a scent– that they are available for a price.

As Jesus was going through Passover ceremony, Jesus picks up the 3rd cup which was the Cup of Redemption and traditionally the Rabbi sets this cup aside. But Jesus takes it and says to His disciples, ‘this is my covenant to you, take and drink’.

When the disciples heard: ‘This is my covenant to you, take and drink,’ they heard… “Will you marry me?

Jesus knew he was proposing to an adulterous, ungrateful, sinful
people, yet He did it anyway.
