“The Secrets Of An Overcoming Disciple”
Pastor/Evangelist David Garcia
Text: 2 Peter 1:1-11
Key Take Away 1 – Sustained revival is consistent obedience and personal overcoming power.
Key Take Away 2 - Christians must be diligent to overcome sin and every obstacle to their Christian walk by power and grace of God.
Introduction - God rewards every Christian who is not only a disciple, but an overcomer, with three great blessings:
1. His Protection
Rev.3:5 “...shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the book of life...”
2. His Description
Rev.3:12 ...”I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God...”
3. His Position
Rev.3:21 “...I will grant to sit with Me on My throne...”
The apostle Peter reveals to us three secrets as to how you and I can achieve not only being a disciple, but an overcoming disciple.
I. The secret of starting well - v1-4
A. We are truly blessed by Jesus - v1-2
1. Note the priority of this blessing - v1a
a. Simon reflects the old nature
b. Peter reflects the new nature
c. Bondservant reflects his humility
Life Lesson - servanthood before ministry
d. Apostle reflects his ministry
2. Note the privilege of this blessing - v1b
TPT “I am writing to those who have been given a faith as equally precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
Life Lesson - “like precious”/equally precious” is the Greek word “isotimos”(used only here) meaning equal value!!
Therefore...
a. We have the same opportunity to be like Jesus
b. We have the same objective to be used by Jesus
c. We have the same ownership by Jesus: “by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
3. Note the proportion of this blessing - v2

Why is Grace & Peace used to greet in the New Testament?

B. We are to become like Jesus - v3-4
We see 4 wonderful blessings we have:
1. Wonderful power
v3a “As His divine power...”
Life Lesson - We have the power to overcome sin and change.
2. Wonderful purity
v3b “has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness”
(a) we have the great gift - “all things”
(b) we have the great goal - “life and godliness.”
Note “life” here is “Zoe” which means “a life that is filled with vitality”!!
3. Wonderful person
v3c “through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.”
(a) “knowledge” here conveys the idea of thorough acquaintance with all that is ours in Christ.
(b) Therefore, the more we know Jesus, the more we can overcome sin and obstacles in life.
4. Wonderful promises
v4a “by which we have been given exceedingly great and precious promises”
(a) His promises are intense - “exceedingly”
(b) His promises are invaluable- “precious”
5. Wonderful potential
v4b “that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
(a) the great essential - “that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature...”
(b) the great escape - "having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
(i) “escaped” in the Greek it means “to flee away” or having “run away”
Life Lesson- Put as much distance between you and the source of the temptation.
(ii) “corruption” in the Greek means the “condition” of a corpse.
Life Lesson- The lusts of society, like immorality, pornography, and drug abuse bring spiritual, moral, and physical death.
II. The secret of continuing well - vv5-7
A. The process
v5a “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith...”
1. The aforementioned
“But also for this very reason” (of all that was mentioned in verses 1-4)
2. The attentiveness-
“giving all diligence” (give this your undivided attention/make every effort/do your best)
B. The progression
“add”
C. The provision
“to your faith”-vv5b-7
1. It is not enough to have faith in Jesus to be saved.
2. We need to add to that saving faith 7 character qualities that the Holy Spirit wants to put in us:
(a) virtue/moral excellence - the vigorous Christian energy to clean up your life; it is the excitement about being free from sin!!
(b) knowledge - of myself and what I’m capable of; this is where I discover who I really am and the holiness of the Spirit I need to be more like Jesus!!
(c) self-control - because I know what I’m capable of, I need the Holy Spirit to give me the fruit of self-control and to help me to submit to God’s Word and subjugate my selfish desires and will to do God’s desires and will.
(d) perseverance/patient endurance - I therefore must not be impulsive and reactive; and therefore must allow God to help me withstand opposition, human and demonic, and to not take matters into my own hands.
(e) godliness - to be devout; to have an spiritual balance between words and actions which are well pleasing to God so that others may see Jesus in my life
(f) brotherly kindness/affection -NLT-a spirit of goodwill and practical care towards
others regardless of race, rank, or religious beliefs. A desire for the best for them regardless of their background or actions.
(g) love/love for everyone - this is the highest form of love: sacrificial, always forgiving, always giving and never selfish.
III. The secret of FINISHING well – vv8-11
A. The challenge
v8 NIV “For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1. The possibility of multiplication(of these 7 qualities)
v8a “For if you possess these qualities...”
2. The potential of maturation (of these 7 qualities)
v8b “in increasing measure...”
3. The prevention of stagnation (with these 7 qualities)
v8c “they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive...”
4. The proficiency and realization (of these 7 qualities)
v8d “in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
B. The consequences
v9 NLT “But those who fail to develop in this way are short sighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins”
1. A life distracted by circumstances -short- sighted: can only see physical things but has no spiritual understanding; cannot see the long term consequences of his actions
2. A life disregarding conviction-they either disregard or overrule the convictions of the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, or godly pastors or spiritual oversight.
3. A life distorted by carnality- they are dominated by their flesh (sinful tendencies), moods, emotions, ungodly friendships or family.
C. The charge
v10 NLT “So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things and you will never fall away.”
1. The proving of your salvation -v10a
2. The possibility of losing your salvation -v10b
D. The certainty
v11 NLT “Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
