Let It Go | Week 3 of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

We are in a hurry. Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more. In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic. What we are doing isn't working! Instead, let's try something different. Let's try the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry as we learn from the life and practices of Jesus Christ. Join Damascus Road as we learn how to stay emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world

Locations & Times

Damascus Road Church

650 N Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719, USA

Sunday 10:30 AM

Welcome to Damascus Road!

We hope your worship experience with us helps you encounter God. We are committed to creativity so our services are varied and unique. We believe God's word is just as relevant today as when it was written, so we strive to apply it to everyday life and communicate in a culturally relevant way. We try our best to use down-to-earth language and utilize pop culture to express God's love, communicate God's truth, invite people into new life, and reconnect people with their creator.
Week 3 | Let It Go
Speaker: Tyler Stibrich
Jesus' teachings on possessions and wealth are radical -- he says you need food and clothing. Why do we feel like we need so much? How can we find freedom from the grind of "more" and accumulation?
Today you'll see a clip from The Minimalists and hear a song from Rend Collective.

Lies advertising is based on:

Lies of GLAMOUR
Lies of SCARCITY
Lies of MORE
“Desire is infinite partly because we were made by God, made for God, made to need God, and made to run on God. We can be satisfied only by the one who is infinite, eternal, and able to supply all our needs; we are only at home in God. When we fall away from God, the desire for the infinite remains, but it is displaced upon things that will certainly lead to destruction.”
- Dallas Willard
Infinite Desire - Finite Soul = Hurry
// the practice of SIMPLICITY //

Simplicity is the practice of centering our lives around God. With God at the center, we carefully add what is most important first and then consider what else we add to our lives so as to avoid busyness, clutter, and pursuits that take our lives farther from God.
“In fact, the ‘good life’ is often defined by how full, busy and complicated our lives are. Modern life is not simple. It is always about adding one more thing”
- Adele Calhoun
“Simplicity is an inward reality that can be seen in an outward lifestyle of choosing to leverage time, money, talents and possessions toward what matters most.”
- John Mark Comer
hey
“The goal isn’t just to declutter your closet or garage but to declutter your life. To clear away the myriad of distractions that ratchet up our anxiety, feed us an endless stream of mind-numbing drivel, and anesthetize us to what really matters.”
- John Mark Comer
practice // Identify the Lie

When you see advertising, try to identify the lie they’re trying to sell you.
practice // Consider the True Cost

Before buying anything, consider the true cost of the item.
Resist the chip-dip fallacy.
practice // Intentionally Limit Your Choices
practice // Borrow Instead of Buy

Practice not buying things and learn to borrow instead.
Responses
1. I will practice Simplicity by placing God at the center of my life and filling in the most important things around God
2. I will practice identifying the lie behind the ads trying to sell me more
3. I will practice not buying things and learn to borrow instead, utilizing community resources like dR Shares
4. I will identify one area of my life that can be simplified and work on giving that to God this month

dR Shares Database

A sharing database where we can indicate if we are up for trading what we have in abundance or even giving it away, or what resources we have available for others to use or borrow. Whether it’s a lawnmower, power tools, sewing machines, books, video games, even cars, as a community we can help each other out without having to own everything ourselves. Be in community, share your needs, even if it’s as simple as borrowing a movie or book, and see if your needs aren’t met.
