Turn It Off | Week 2 of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

We are in a hurry. Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more. In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic. What we are doing isn't working! Instead, let's try something different. Let's try the Ruthless Elimination of Hurry as we learn from the life and practices of Jesus Christ. Join Damascus Road as we learn how to stay emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world

Locations & Times

Damascus Road Church

650 N Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719, USA

Sunday 10:30 AM

Welcome to Damascus Road!

We hope your worship experience with us helps you encounter God. We are committed to creativity so our services are varied and unique. We believe God's word is just as relevant today as when it was written, so we strive to apply it to everyday life and communicate in a culturally relevant way. We try our best to use down-to-earth language and utilize pop culture to express God's love, communicate God's truth, invite people into new life, and reconnect people with their creator.
Week 2 | Turn It Off
Speaker: Megan Miller
Our lives are filled with noise and distraction, a whirlwind of opinions, social media, information, things to watch and see and consume. Is it possible to be quiet? Why do we struggle with silence? Why do we need it? Can we embrace turning it off?
Today you'll see a clip from How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
hey
hey

Which animal would lead your parade?

“I mean, how do we have any kind of spiritual life at all if we can’t pay attention longer than a goldfish? [which, in case you were wondering, goldfish have an attention span of 9 seconds. In 2000, before the digital revolution, humans had an attention span of 12 seconds. Now it is 8.]
How do you pray, read the Scriptures, sit under a teaching at church, or rest well on the Sabbath when every chance you get, you reach for the dopamine dispenser that is your phone?”
- John Mark Comer
“This new normal of hurried digital distraction is robbing us of the ability to be present.”
- John Mark Comer
Boredom is an uncomfortable feeling that encourages you to engage and be creative.
eremos [ἔρημος]
desert, deserted place, desolate place, solitary place, lonely place, quiet place, wilderness
silence and solitude
What is your eremos?
There are two kinds of silence - external and internal.
“In fact, C.S. Lewis, in his masterwork of satire, The Screwtape Letters, has the demons railing against silence as a danger to their cause (the ruin of a Christian’s soul). Senior demon Screwtape calls the devil’s realm a ‘Kingdom of Noise’ and claims, ‘We will make the whole universe a noise in the end.’”
- John Mark Comer
practice // turn something off
practice // set aside an eremos time or “abiding” time
“Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life … We do not take the spiritual life seriously if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to him.”
- Henri Nouwen
“It’s more resting than working, more about not doing than doing, subtraction not addition.”
- John Mark Comer
Responses
1. I will give up a source of noise for Lent by choosing to turn something off.
2. I will set aside an "eremos" or "abiding" time to let my soul rest in God.
3. I will choose the uncomfortable engagement and creativity when I'm bored this week instead of easy distraction.
4. I will get curious and look a little closer at others, God, and my internal world.

dR Shares Database

A sharing database where we can indicate if we are up for trading what we have in abundance or even giving it away, or what resources we have available for others to use or borrow. Whether it’s a lawnmower, power tools, sewing machines, books, video games, even cars, as a community we can help each other out without having to own everything ourselves. Be in community, share your needs, even if it’s as simple as borrowing a movie or book, and see if your needs aren’t met.
