We have talked about a changed you and a freed you. Today’s topic has the potential to not only change you but affect the people around you.
Solomon became King after his father David. God came to him in a dream and said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
God grants this wish. Tales of Solomon’s wisdom are common knowledge even today.
In the Old Testament, wisdom was connected to everyday experience.
Knowledge is the possession of facts. It is having the tools in your tool belt, but wisdom is knowing how to use them. You can have knowledge without having wisdom, but you cannot have wisdom without possessing knowledge.
The Bible extols the benefits of wisdom - being saved from wickedness, being protected and watched over, living a long life, sidestepping avoidable suffering, and being kept safe.
Wisdom also helps you know God better.
The pathway to know God better, to have greater intimacy in your relationship with Jesus Christ, is wisdom.
The life lived for God, pleasing Him, growing in the knowledge of Him, strengthened by Him, and walking in the truth are accessed through the truth of wisdom.
God uses a life lived with wisdom to have a positive impact on the world and point people to Jesus.
Knowing is not the same as doing. Wisdom is putting the information to work in your life.
Wisdom knows that you change people by loving them, serving them, eating with them, inviting them over, and pointing them to Jesus.
Where do you and I get wisdom?
God is the author of wisdom.
How is the fear of God and wisdom connected?
When we think fear we think afraid, terrified, scared. However, almost every time God shows up the first words are “Do not be afraid.” A more accurate understanding is respect, reverence, awe.
We have a healthy respect for God for what he is capable of, but we do not need to fear his punishment if we are in a right relationship with Jesus. We do not have to face the punishment, because Jesus was punished in our place.
So how do I get wisdom?
God gives wisdom generously.
Right now our world needs a different kind of living. It needs wise living.
