SERMON: Psalm 42:3-5 “What the World Needs from the Church”

“Our community needs the church now more than ever. What must the church offer?”
1. Charity over Critique
2. Lament over Loudness
3. The Word over Wrangling
“In charity, lament, and the Word the Church prevails.”

1. We spoke much today of the importance and significance of God’s Word. Review the following texts and discuss why this is so: Joshua 23:6; Psalm 119:89; Isaiah 8:20, 40:6-8; Jeremiah 23:29; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; James 1:22, 25.
2. What is to happen is we neglect the foundation of the Word of God? Discuss as you review these texts, and share if you have experienced this in your own life. Matthew 7:24-29; 2 Timothy 4:1-4; James 4:1-4.
3. Our world and even our churches are facing issues that divide. Is unity important to God and how does division grieve God? How might we best overcome forces of division in our world and in our churches? Proverbs 17:1,14; Psalm 133:1; John 13:34-35, 17:20-22; 1 Corinthians 1:10; Romans 12:5; Philippians 1:27, 2:21-7; Colossians 3:14; Titus 3:2.
4. What is the importance of our speech and how powerful is a charitable word? Is your tendency to speak from criticism or to speak from love and care? Job 19:2; Proverbs 12:18, 25, 15:23, 16:24, 25:11-12; Ecclesiastes 10:12-14; Isaiah 50:4; Ephesians 4:29.
5. Review these Scriptural statements regarding the role and function of human authority. Where does all authority come from and how are we to respond to it? Daniel 2:21, 37-38; John 19:9-11; Romans 13:1-10; 1 Timothy 2:1-2; Titus 3:1; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 2:13-17.
