BODY NEWS

Faith Pledges
We are almost there! We have raised $9085.50 toward our matching funds goal of $10,000 to be applied to the total $50,000 for the repair of the parking lot and parsonage roof. Please help us reach this first goal of $10,000. Once we reach the first $10,000, our matching donor will contribute $10,000, which will bring us down to $30,000 due! Please help us pay off this debt. To God be all the glory!

Prayer Chain
We are updating our current prayer chain. If you would like to be a prayer partner with needs of our church, fill out the blue card in the pew rack write “Prayer” on it and give it to Pastor Jeff.

Pastor Appreciation
Each year, the Assemblies of God designates October as Pastor Appreciation Month. On Sunday, October 7th we will officially kick-off Pastor Appreciation month at Dover Assembly of God. Paul Jones will be our speaker that day! We would like to encourage everyone to participate in this month-long celebration in your own special and unique way. We hope that you can use whatever skills or abilities God has blessed you with to bless Pastor Jeff, Pastor Luis and Pastor Keith and their families. Let’s keep this going the entire month of October to show them how much we appreciate everything they do for us. Please mark your calendar and start planning how you might use your talents to say Thank you to our Pastoral Team.

Fall always for me was the beginning of the New Year. Even more than January 1st. It’s a time to start new with your kids. The hectic pace and everything being unscheduled and random is over.

So now school has already started, but as it was approaching, how many here did what the commercials told us to do? Stock up and get everything in order that you needed for school...new clothes, backpacks, tennis shoes, Instruments, all those supply lists?

In that same vein, did we prepare our kids spiritually for the new school year?

We're going to look at that aspect today. We'll look at 2 examples that give us some great truths. The first one is...
hey
If you don’t know the story, Hannah was one of 2 women who were married to Elkanah. The other wife had children, but Hannah didn’t.

She kept praying that God would give her a child and God answered that prayer.

But as part of her prayer, she promised to Give the child back to God for Him to use.
Whether we make this same vow or not, do we realize that our children are given to us for a time, but ultimately they belong to God.

Our job as parents is to raise them to serve the Lord. We are not to plan out their lives, we are to allow God to plan out their lives.
Children are indeed a gift from God. We may not pray that same type of prayer and God may not allow you to miraculously conceive, but none the less, that is still the truth.

Children are God’s present to you, but they are only ours for a time...
Our job and responsibility as recipients of God’s gift of children is to give them to God.

Now we don’t take them to the temple, but when we give them to God, that means we dedicate ourselves to teach them to serve the Lord.
When they are young we get to set the rules. We take them to church, we make them read and pray. Hopefully we do it well enough that it sticks.

When Hannah gave him to the Lord, she gave up the right to dictate how his life should be. He was God’s to use and grow as He saw fit.

Our job as parents is not to dictate their lives, but to allow them to be sensitive to God and follow His lead.

Sometimes we think we know better and we may not listen to what they say God is telling them. God’s path for them might be radically different than what we envision. Are we able to let God have his way with our kids?
Train them according to their ability and their God-given design.

What natural talents and abilities do they have? Encourage them along those paths.

Unfortunately, this verse is not a promise, but a principle.

The second person we'll look at today is...
hey
Joash was one of 2 boys that became kings very young.

Joash had and needed a mentor. Jehoiada was that mentor. He needed someone to speak into his life and instruct him in the ways of God and of life.

We celebrated our Girls' Ministries today and we have done the same for the Royal Rangers (boys' ministries).

Why are those ministries so vital? Because the young people need someone to mentor them. To speak into their lives and help them grow into responsible Christian adults.

Joash succeeded as long as he was being mentored by Jehoiada.

But we also see why it is important for our children to develop a strong faith of their own.

Joash did the right things to please Jehoiada, not because he knew they were right. When Jehoiada died, so did Joash’s need for his approval and Joash fell away from the faith.

We as parents and grandparents need to be sure that our children and grandchildren learn to have their own relationship with Christ, not just to please us.

If it is only to please us, then one day that relationship will go away.

And the last person we'll look at today is...
hey
Joash had Jehoiada to help him and Josiah would have the court officials as his mentors, but the difference here is that at 16, he began to search out God for himself.

When we send our children back to school, we never know how God can use them at whatever age they might be.

God may use your 8 year old to do something great. God may call your 16 year-old to lead a ministry.

This generation coming up now-the ones we prayed for this morning, may be the next Josiah, the next Billy Graham, the next Elisabeth Elliott.

We as a church are committed to making sure they are prepared for when that time comes, but that commitment requires all of us to be a part.

Maybe you can be the next Jehoiada, or be a part of the “court officials” to mentor that next great leader.

Grandparents Article

Lest you feel that your time with children is over, or you feel that working with children at your age isn’t your thing anymore, read this...
Now it’s about grandparents, but I think it applies to older people who work with children.
https://health.usnews.com/wellness/articles/2017-09-13/the-health-benefits-of-having-and-being-grandparents
Doesn’t all this sound like a pattern designed by God? Everyone benefits when we are available to be a part of a child’s life.

They aren’t small for very long and the time we have with them is short. Parents, appreciate what God has given you and do your best to lead them to Christ.

Older members, do yourself a favor and be involved in a young person’s life. You may be the mentor that changes one child for God.
