The Chest of Joash

2 Chronicles 24:1-14 We do not give because others give or we want to be seen of men, but we give because of our love for God and our desire to see His name honored and glorified.

I. THE KING’S MOTIVATED DETERMINATION

“Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba” (Verse 1).

A. A Determination of Affection.

“Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest” (Verse 2).

William Penn said, "Right is right, even if everyone is against it. Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it."
“The first of all the commandments is…you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30).

B. A Determination of Action.

“Now it happened after this that Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the Lord” (Verse 4).

When God’s leaders say, “Lights, camera, action” – people who love God and His church, will be on the scene to serve and give.
“Then he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you do it quickly” (Verse 5).

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:16).

Christian, let’s do what we are going to do for Christ now.
“Then at the king’s command they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the house of the Lord” (Verse 8).

II. THE PEOPLE’S MARVELOUS DEMONSTRATION

A. A Demonstration of Unity.

“And they made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God had imposed on Israel in the wilderness. Then all the leaders and all the people rejoiced, brought their contributions, and put them into the chest until all had given” (Verses 9-10).

B. A Demonstration of Understanding.

“So the king called Jehoiada the chief priest, and said to him, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord and of the assembly of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?” (Verse 6).

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10).

We believe that the beginning point in giving is the matter of giving God ten percent.
Then, everything above that is an offering (love offering).
What you give to the Chest of Joash is between you and the Lord.
“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

III. THE HOUSE OF GOD’S MAGNIFICENT DECORATION

“Then all the leaders and all the people rejoiced, brought their contributions, and put them into the chest until all had given. So it was, at that time, when the chest was brought to the king’s official by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, that the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it and returned it to its place. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance” (Verses 10-11).

Giving is a matter of obedience.

A. A Decoration of Completion.

“The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the house of the Lord; and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also those who worked in iron and bronze to restore the house of the Lord. So the workmen labored, and the work was completed by them; they restored the house of God to its original condition and reinforced it” (Verses 12-13).

We use our facilities and our finances for reaching people and teaching people for the glory of God.

B. A Decoration of Continuation.

“When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; they made from it articles for the house of the Lord, articles for serving and offering, spoons and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada” (Verse 14).

“He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;” (Philippians 1:6).

Bring your first and best gift for God on Chest of Joash Sunday.
