Knowing God

Knowing God

This is the first talk in a new series, going back to the heart of the matter, just getting to know God again. Not the God of organized religion, not the God of lightning bolts and fury, and not the "non-judgy" god of our culture. The God of holiness and grace.

“And I find myself longing to return
Back to the place where I started
Back when I knew next to nothing
Back to the heart
Back to the heart of the matter” -Bob Bennett

Episode 1-the call of Moses
1. Note that repeating someone’s name in the middle east communicates endearing love. "Moses, Moses," God calls out.

2. Note that “holy” has 2 meanings; (1) “other” or unique; and (2) set apart or consecrated or special. Note that God's presence even made the dirt holy.

3. Note that God reveals himself as “Yahweh,” “I am,” but Moses still is stuck in his identity, as someone who's been abandoned.

4. Note all of Moses excuses.
“Who am I?” (3:11)
“What shall I tell them?” (3:13)
“What if they do not believe me?” (4:1)
“I have never been eloquent” (4:10)
“Please send someone else” (4:13)

Episode 2-the call of Isaiah
1. Note that God is very different than the god imagined by our culture. God is holy, God is fire and smoke.

2. Note that Isaiah, the holiest guy around, is undone by God’s holiness, but then put back together by God’s grace.

3. Note that Isaiah's response to knowing God is to want to tell people about Him. He's no longer cowering. He wants people to know what he knows.

Episode 3: The Call of Peter
1. Note that encountering Jesus is scary for Peter. He responds just like Moses and Isaiah.

2. Note that holiness makes Peter acutely aware of what he is not. But grace invites him into a new purpose in life.

Living without God can only lead to 1 of 2 places; Pride or Despair.
But encountering the true God…puts us in our place. Our place of being sinners before a holy God, but being deeply loved by the God of grace. It creates humility and hope.
